Class Identity

It is not easy to make powerful alts in Diablo Immortal, so choosing the Barbarian as your main is a big decision. Their ability to wipe out hordes of enemies with Area of Effect (AoE) attacks makes them a great choice for leveling and farming. The Barbarian is an aggressive class that is constantly getting up close and personal to deliver devastating attacks. Arguably the king of melee combat, you are in the heat of battle at most times, whether you are fighting off swarms of enemies alone or leading your team into battle. You have many different skills that have Crowd Control effects allowing you to endlessly pin down enemies. On top of being a solo powerhouse, the Barbarian harnesses some of the best group buffs in the game once you find the correct Legendary Items, making it an essential part of any group endeavors.

Strengths

Barbarians are one of the fastest characters in the game and when using the right Legendary Item (Swiftwing), they can give that speed to their teammates as well. On top of being insanely fast they are also impressively strong and rip through any content the game has to offer. Being able to deal massive AoE damage as well as the ability to put out huge damage numbers, makes them one of the most formidable characters for PvE and PvP content alike. If all this was not enough, the Barbarian gives all teammates 25% increased damage while using the Battlemaster's Helm with Demoralize, making them an excellent choice for any group activities.

Weaknesses

All great things must have a downside and for the Barbarian it is simple, monsters and opponents in PvP can hit hard. You need to get close to them to do what the Barbarian is good at and with this can come great risk. When content gets harder as you climb the ranks of Challenge Rifts you will feel a considerable need to focus on your defense. The Barbarian can also be dependent on its ability to burst down enemies quickly, especially in PvP. Sadly these high damage and high mobility skills have longer cooldowns. So when enemies keep trickling into the fight or try to escape, the Barbarian can run out of options quickly and not be able to close the gap with ranged characters.

Starting Out as a Barbarian

Starting your Barbarian on the right foot is key in order to make your character as powerful as possible. Read our full Game Walkthrough for a comprehensive starter guide.

  • Find better equipment for your character. Your bag flashes when you pick up better equipment.
  • Upgrade your equipment at the Blacksmith. Turn on auto-pickup for all item types in settings and periodically return to town to salvage.
  • Unlock Whirlwind, Sprint and Furious Charge by level 18. This gives you most of the skills for the solo farming variant below.
  • Claim the Battlepass Legendary Item. This gives you an early Legendary Item that increases your character's power. Choose wisely!
  • Hunt Legendary Items. Keep an eye out for The Remembered specifically, it's one of the strongest items the Barbarian has.
  • Find Normal Gems and Legendary Gems. Hidden Lairs have a chance to drop Normal Gems and if you use a Crest, Elder Rifts have a chance to drop Legendary Gems.
  • Unlock the Helliquary at level 41. Try to unlock the Helliquary as soon as you can so you can always receive Scoria from your daily Bounties.

Builds

Solo Farming

Concept

While solo farming, the faster your Barbarian is, the more rewarding your playtime will be. Luckily the Barbarian is no stranger to going fast and won't have any issue staying strong while doing so. This setup works well even without any of the Inscriptions and is essentially the bread and butter for the Barbarian.

Skills & Items

Furious Charge - This not only helps you move through the mobs and get into good positions, but it also deals insane damage to anything in your path.

Lacerate - This hits hard on a single target and heals you a bit as well. Use this on any tough Elites you come across that survive your initial onslaught.

Sprint - Speed is everything, alternate this with your Wrath of the Berserker to keep yourself zooming!

Whirlwind - Is your main skill for damage. Two items equipped give it a large radius and make it suck in enemies.

Wrath of the Berserker - Great buff for solo play, giving you movement speed as well as Critical Hit Chance with Broken Soul.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandThe Tempest - Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed reduced.
Off-HandBroken Soul - Wrath of the Berserker now increases Critical Hit Chance instead of Attack Speed.
HelmSecond Breath - Sprint duration increased by 30%.
ShoulderThe Coming Storm - Wrath of the Berserker cooldown reduced by 15%.
ChestThe Gathering - Whirlwind pulls in all enemies it damages.
PantsDetermination - Furious Charge can now be charged up to increase its range and damage.

Gameplay

The gameplay here is pretty straight forward, two of your skills buff your speed and damage while the other three do all of your damage. Keep Sprint and Wrath of the Berserker up whenever they're available and use the others as follows:

  1. If Furious Charge is up and you see more than a couple monsters, charge in to start with a massive hit.
  2. When you come across packs of enemies, always use Whirlwind to gather them up and disperse them quickly. Keep in mind that Whirlwind with The Tempest slows you down, so only use it to get the kill then go back to running.
  3. If you see an Elite use the above methods to clear out the lesser enemies then use Lacerate to slice them up.

Other Setups

  • Sprint, Whirlwind and Wrath of the Berserker all have many Inscriptions available. Try some others out so see if you like that playstyle better. As an example using Ferocious Gale and Hell's Legacy leaves a trail of flaming tornadoes behind you while using Sprint and Whirlwind!
  • Another great option is swapping Wrath of the Berserker and Broken Soul for Hammer of the Ancients and The Remembered + Davin's Legacy. This gives you 2 Spirits of the Ancients that do great damage as well as provide you with a stun.
Group Farming

Concept

For Group Farming half of your job is to buff the team with Sprint and the War Cay from Demoralize. The rest of your skills are for AoE and Single Target damage so you can blitz through the content as a team.

Skills & Items

Demoralize - This skill matched with the Battlemaster's Helm gives everyone in the party a 25% damage buff. Save it for when you get to Bosses and Elites.

Lacerate - This hits very hard on a single target and heals you a bit as well.

Sprint - Combining this with Swiftwing gives the buff to your allies that are nearby.

Whirlwind - Your primary source of AoE damage as a Barbarian. Great for killing trash, while staying mobile.

Wrath of the Berserker - Gives extra damage and speed. Great when farming in the open world or doing any areas that require a lot of movement.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandThe Tempest - Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed reduced.
Off-HandBroken Soul - Wrath of the Berserker now increases Critical Hit Chance instead of Attack Speed.
HelmBattlemaster's Helm - Demoralize is replaced with a War Cry that increases all damage you and nearby allies inflict by 25% for 6 seconds.
ShoulderThe Coming Storm - Wrath of the Berserker cooldown reduced by 15%.
ChestThe Gathering - Whirlwind pulls in all enemies it damages.
PantsSwiftwing - Sprint now also increases movement speed of nearby allies.

Gameplay

The gameplay here is similar to other variants, but now you need to give your teammates Sprint and the War Cry from Demoralize. This makes you feel less active on your character, but the bonuses for the team are well worth the sacrifice. Use these 3 rules and every group will love having you around.

  1. Always keep Sprint up on your team.
  2. Save Demoralize for Bosses and Elites so the team has the 25% damage buff when it counts.
  3. Use Whirlwind to kill lesser enemies and Lacerate on Bosses and Elites.

Other Setups

  • Using 3 skills for buffs may seem a bit dull. As long as you're giving your group Sprint and War Cry, you can take skills that better fit your playstyle while still doing great damage.
  • Wrath of the Berserker is a great way to simply buff yourself but this can be swapped for many others for more damage or utility.
    • For example you can swap Wrath of the Berserker and Broken Soul for Hammer of the Ancients and The Remembered + Davin's Legacy. This gives you 2 Spirits of the Ancients that will do great damage and provide you with a stun.
Boss Killing

Concept

The Helliquary, Path of Blood and Kion's Ordeal all require you to fight difficult bosses that often demand special considerations. These bosses tend to hit extremely hard and test your ability to survive as you chip away at them. With this in mind, set your Barbarian up more defensively so you're not in the dirt right away.

Skills & Items

Cleave - Your primary source of damage. Great damage on hit as well as a stacking bleed. Combining this with Lacerate's bleed keeps them dying while you're running around evading.

Furious Charge - Deals massive damage and gives you a way to escape danger. Line up any enemies that spawn during the fight to blast them away.

Hammer of the Ancients - Use, The Remembered Inscription. The Spirit of the Ancients will take aggro from you and pump out some serious damage.

Lacerate - This hits very hard on a single target and heals you a bit as well. An essential skill for taking down difficult bosses at the end.

Undying Rage - This is very helpful when these fights get really hard. It allows you to get in there and do some damage, knowing you can run away at the right time and still survive.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandRending Bite - Lacerate now inflicts Bleeding that deals 5348 damage over 3 seconds.
Off-HandThe Remembered - Hammer of the Ancients now summons a Spirit of the Ancients who stuns all nearby enemies and then fights beside you for a while.
HelmAny Helm
ShoulderHatred's Reach - Cleave range increased by 20%.
ChestDavin's Legacy - Hammer of the Ancients maximum charges increased by 1.
PantsDetermination - Furious Charge can now be charged up to increase its range and damage.

Gameplay

This setup works very well to take down big bosses in Diablo Immortal, following 3 simple steps:

  1. Cast Hammer of the Ancients on the boss to get both Spirit of the Ancients. Furious Charge into the boss, use Cleave 3 times, then Lacerate non-stop.
  2. Undying Rage procs, continue to Lacerate to gain your health back. Before Undying Rage ends, use Cleave again, then Furious Charge through the boss to get away.
  3. Run around evading attacks while you wait for Undying Rage to come back, then repeat the process.

Step 2 is where things can get a bit spicy. In some boss fights you can easily get most of your health back, making step 3 no sweat. If you try this and find yourself not able to regain much health, play more defensively from the start. Try to use Undying Rage as an emergency escape, instead of a way to do DPS for several extra seconds.

Other Setups

  • Furious Charge can be swapped out for any other skill, but keep in mind having some movement skill is usually very helpful.
  • The idea of going "full Bleed," isn't the only way to do this, but it provides great damage with a defensive playstyle. Many other variants in this guide use Whirlwind as the primary skill and that can be subbed in here too without much issue.
Challenge Rifts

Concept

Challenge Rifts are all about being well-rounded so that your Barbarian can thrive from start to finish. Focusing too much on AoE damage results in painfully long boss fights, and without enough AoE you'll never get to the boss in time. With the right combination of skills you should be able to thrive throughout the entire Rift.

Skills & Items

Furious Charge - This not only helps you move through the mobs and get into good positions, but deals insane damage to anything in your path.

Hammer of the Ancients - The key here is, The Remembered. The Spirit of the Ancients take aggro from you and pump out some serious damage.

Lacerate - This hits very hard on a single target and heals you a bit as well. An essential skill for taking down difficult bosses at the end of these Challenge Rifts.

Whirlwind - Your primary source of damage. The increased range from The Tempest helps a lot as these get more challenging.

Wrath of the Berserker - Great buff for solo play and in this setup we can take two inscriptions to increase its uptime. This skill especially helps for the boss at the end, which is where the Barbarian struggles.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandThe Tempest - Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed reduced.
Off-HandThe Remembered - Hammer of the Ancients now summons a Spirit of the Ancients who stuns all nearby enemies and then fights beside you for a while.
HelmLasting Hate - Wrath of the Berserker duration increased by 30%.
ShoulderThe Coming Storm - Wrath of the Berserker cooldown reduced by 15%.
ChestDavin's Legacy - Hammer of the Ancients maximum charges increased by 1.
PantsDetermination - Furious Charge can now be charged up to increase its range and damage.

Gameplay

  1. Start by gathering a group of enemies and send down your Spirit of the Ancients on them. You have 2 charges, so save the other for when the first expires.
  2. Now use Wrath of the Berserker and get close enough to start shredding them with Whirlwind.
  3. As Whirlwind depletes, charge up Furious Charge and send yourself straight through the pack. If needed, do it again.
  4. As Whirlwind is coming back you can use it to start damaging them again.
  5. At this point there shouldn't be anything alive, but if there is, take them down with Lacerate. If there's a lot of enemies alive, continue to kite them to new enemies as you prepare to do the same rotation again.
  6. For the Boss try to keep one Spirit of the Ancients up at all times for a distraction and spam Lacerate. If the boss spawns enemies, use Whirlwind to take them out.

Other Setups

  • There are many different setups that can find great success within Challenge Rifts, this is just one example of a balanced build you can make. The key is to have diversity in your skills and make sure you're prepared to deliver AoE and Single Target DPS.
  • Are you dying a ton? Try using Undying Rage instead of Wrath of the Berserker.
  • Need better damage on the Boss? Throw on Cleave instead of Whirlwind and make em bleed while you Lacerate.
  • You should never feel locked into a skill set or playstyle, as there are many combinations that are very powerful!
  • When doing these in a group you can utilize Crowd Control while still bringing decent damage. Try out Ground Stomp and Demoralize with Bestial Threat, to pin monsters down constantly while your team decimates them.
PvP

Concept

There will certainly be multiple builds that can thrive in PvP game modes as that landscape develops further and there are many skills that can be very useful in certain situations. For this section I'll cover what I consider to be a very competitive and fast-paced build, that is quite destructive if used properly.

Skills & Items

Furious Charge - Use this to open up on your target(s) with massive damage as well as a knock up from Screaming Fury.

Lacerate - Great for finishing off anyone who's still alive after you've run dry on Whirlwind, or when in 1v1 combat. This hits very hard on a single target heals you a bit as well.

Sprint - Combining this with 2 different Inscriptions gives you speed, insane dodge and immunity to crowd control, all in one skill. This skill is an essential part of being unstoppable as a Barbarian.

Undying Rage - Once this pops you know you have a limited amount of time to finish your slaying or get out of there before it wears off. If enough enemies are around, you can likely heal to full health while this is up, making you very hard to deal with.

Whirlwind - Your primary source of damage, especially when there are multiple enemies around. The Gathering is without a doubt one of the most annoying skills for your opponents to deal with in the entire game. It constantly pulls them in and CC's them briefly. Never underestimate its power.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandThe Tempest - Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed reduced.
Off-HandAny Off-Hand
HelmSecond Breath - Sprint duration increased by 30%.
ShoulderBroken Grasp - Sprint also increases your dodge chance by 20%.
ChestThe Gathering - Whirlwind pulls in all enemies it damages.
PantsScreaming Fury - Furious Charge now charges to a location, damaging all nearby enemies and knocking them into the air.

Gameplay

The process here is very simple and extremely fun to play around with. You'll truly never have a dull moment and will be a constant threat in PvP. You'll be tempted to push into battle non-stop as your thirst for blood can't possibly be quenched, but try to contain yourself and leave the battle when the time is right. You can be back in a few seconds as strong as you were at the start!

  1. Cast Sprint before you dive into battle. This makes you faster while you're casting Whirlwind, very hard to hit and immune to seemingly all Crowd Control in the game.
  2. Now you charge in with Furious Charge, this knocks them up for a second giving you time to do some more damage.
  3. Use Lacerate or Whirlwind to do heavy damage depending on if you're fighting 1 or multiple enemies.

If the fight is fierce, Undying Rage will activate, giving you a limited amount of time to finish the job or get out of there alive. Either way keep on swinging and giving them hell until your last moments. You may be able to leech back most of your life and feel more confident finishing up a fight. If things are going poorly during your last stand use your final Furious Charge to attempt to escape back behind friendly lines. Once you use a Bandage and get your bearings straight, you'll have all your cooldowns back and can go right back to giving them hell!

Other Setups

  • In the current state of the game, Sprint and Undying Rage are almost mandatory so I wouldn't recommend removing either of those Skills from a PvP setup.
  • Furious Charge and Whirlwind are used primarily for damage and can be changed out for many others depending on what you want to bring to the battle.
    • For huge damage Cleave is a great alternative to Whirlwind, and Chained Spear with Crusher Rig can replace Furious Charge.
    • If you want to try to bring more Crowd Control try using Demoralize with Bestial Threat or Ground Stomp to pin down enemies.
  • Mix it up and be unpredictable, the Barbarian is very strong and has many weapons at its disposal. If your enemies can't predict what's coming the next time they see you, they'll stand no chance!

Barbarian Skills

A Barbarian can choose 1 Primary Attack and 4 skills to use at a time. Primary Attacks have no cooldown and generate resource to cast their Ultimate ability. Skills automatically gain ranks as you level up and can be switched around any time out of combat. Special endgame items called Charms add additional skill ranks that enhance their power. There are also Legendary Items that modify a skill's power. Let's look at the Barbarian skills in detail to understand how they work.

Class Consumable

Every class has its own consumable item that drops from turning in a Bestiary page as well as from Zone Event Bosses. The Barbarian has the Horn of Arreat which increases all damage done by you and your nearby allies by 10% for 20 minutes.

Frenzy (Primary)

Unlocked: Level 34
Cooldown: None
Charms: +1%/2%/3% Damage
Type(s): Damage

Ultimate: Restless Demon - Enhance Frenzy for 12 seconds, allowing movement while attacking and unhindered movement through enemies, granting Stun immunity, and increasing attack speed as if fully stacked. You also gain a shield that absorbs damage equal to 20% of your maximum Life for 3 seconds.

Best Use: The Ultimate is quite powerful but Lacerate seems to be the superior option in almost all situations due to its healing. Ca'arsen's Invigoration + Zod Stone are a fun combo to play around with if you get them to high rank as they can lead to insane uptime for the Ultimate

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Main-HandThe Maddening - Movement speed increased by 10% while Frenzy is at its maximum stacks.

Lacerate (Primary)

Best Use: An all around amazing Primary skill, providing great damage and consistent healing between your other skills. The Ultimate can heal you to full quickly when a lot of enemies are nearby, making it a great addition to a Challenge Rift push or a tool to save you towards the end of a tough Battleground fight.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Main-HandSvot's Reach - Cleave now strikes in a full circle around you.
Off-HandFlesh Splitter - Cleave damage increased by 10%.

Description: Release a ferocious shout that forces nearby monsters to attack you. Also deals X damage to all nearby enemies and reduces their damage done by 30%. Lasts 8 seconds.

Best Use: Adding the Battlemaster's Helm Inscription for 25% increased damage to all party members is mandatory when playing in a group. The Bestial Threat Inscription can be nice in PvP to snare enemies whether you're escaping or engaging them.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Off-HandFearhammer - Demoralize duration increased by 30%.
HelmBestial Threat - Demoralize is replaced with a terrifying roar that damages all nearby enemies and immobilizes them.
Battlemaster's Helm - Demoralize is replaced with a War Cry that increases all damage you and nearby allies inflict by 25% for 6 seconds.

Furious Charge

Unlocked: Level 18

Charms: +1%/2%/3% Damage
Type(s): Dash, Damage

Description: Charge forward, knocking away all enemies in your path and dealing X damage. Maximum 3 charges. Players may only be affected once every 3 seconds by this skill.

Best Use: Amazing in PvP since it's a fast, high damage skill. When aimed properly this skill will be the beginning of the end for whoever is in your sights. Charge in with massive damage, slay everyone, then charge out all in a flash. Also useful when pushing high Challenge Rifts as it provides great damage while offering a way to escape danger.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
PantsDetermination - Furious Charge can now be charged up to increase its range and damage.
Screaming Fury - Furious Charge now charges to a location, damaging all nearby enemies and knocking them into the air.

Grab

Description: Seize a nearby monster and wield it as a weapon, replacing your Primary Attack with a swing for X to Y damage against all enemies directly in front of you. Activate again to throw the monster, dealing Y damage to enemies in the path. Doesn't work against other players, elites, bosses or otherwise large enemies.

Best Use: For laughs, 100% effective. For anything else, 0% effective.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions

Unlocked: Level 41
Cooldown: 9 Sec
Charms: +1%/2%/3% Damage
Type(s): Control, Charge

Description: Stomp the ground, stunning nearby enemies for up to 1.5 seconds and dealing X damage. Charging longer increases range and duration up to 3 seconds.

Best Use: I found this to be less useful than Demoralize with Bestial Threat, as this requires a charge to have a decent range. However if you plan to be close to enemies this is a better AoE Stun due to it's shorter cooldown.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
HelmWeighted Brow - Ground Stomp range increased by 20%.
PantsRockspike - Ground Stomp now affects all nearby enemies and can be charged to increase range and damage.

Hammer of the Ancients

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Main-HandSellena's Iron - Leap causes the ground to shake where you land, dealing X damage to all enemies in the area over 3 seconds.

Cooldown: 30 Sec
Charms: +1%/2%/3% Duration
Type(s): Buff

Description: Enter a rage for X seconds that prevents you from dying and causes all your attacks to heal you for 30% of damage done. Undying Rage activates automatically when you take fatal damage.

Best Use: Extremely powerful in PvP, as well as any challenging PvE content such as Helliquary Bosses. If you find yourself dying a lot, try putting this on to give yourself some time to recover when things get out of hand.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
NoneNone

Whirlwind

Unlocked: Level 8
Cooldown: 0.5 Sec
Charms: +1%/2%/3% Damage
Type(s): Damage, Channel

Description: Become a Whirlwind of steel, continually striking all nearby enemies for X damage while moving at 70% reduced speed. Using Whirlwind slowly consumes its energy, which recovers while Whirlwind is not in use.

Best Use: One of the best Barbarian skills that is listed in nearly every build variant below. The Gathering Inscription in PvP is insanely strong, even if this isn't the Barbarians highest damage skill. The simplicity during PvE can't be beat and if anything is still standing your Primary is the perfect filler while it charges back up. "Spin to Win" definitely applies here!

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Main-HandThe Tempest - Whirlwind radius increased, but Whirlwind movement speed reduced.
ShoulderYadama's Cyclone - Whirlwind damage increased by 10%.

Cooldown: 30 Sec
Charms: +1%/2%/3% Duration
Type(s): Buff

Description: Enter a berserk rage that increases your attack speed by 50% and movement speed by 20% for 6.5 seconds.

Best Use: Great for solo farming content when any extra speed is a benefit. This skill requires many Inscriptions to start being powerful but if you can fit it into your solo setup you'll be quite strong when it's active.

SlotLegendary Item Inscriptions
Off-HandBroken Soul - Wrath of the Berserker now increases Critical Hit Chance instead of Attack Speed.
HelmBerserker's Sanity - Wrath of the Berserker now also dispels effects which cause loss of control of your character.

Barbarian Stat Priorities

Attributes

Offense Rating (OR) and Defense Rating (DR) are the two most important stats for all classes in Diablo Immortal. In order to maximize ORDR, prioritize the total amount of attributes on your gear. You gain 1 point of ORDR from every attribute point (Strength, Fortitude, Vitality, Willpower, Intelligence).

The Barbarian's main stat is Strength, giving +4 Damage per point. All other things equal, use gear with Strength to maximize the damage you deal. Fortitude is also important early on because it gives you Armor Penetration (and therefore Critical Hit Chance), but becomes less important later due to diminishing returns on how much Critical Hit Chance you can gain.

The Barbarian's worst stat is Intelligence because it only gives +1 ORDR. If possible, don't use it.

  1. Strength - +1 ORDR and +4 Damage.
  2. Fortitude - +1 ORDR, +6 Armor, and +6 Armor Penetration. Armor increases your chance to Block, which mitigates 20% of incoming damage. This is a nice defensive boost, especially when pushing Challenge Rifts or Helliquary bosses. Armor Penetration gives Critical Hit Chance, but it has diminishing returns at higher values.
  3. Vitality - +1 ORDR and +40 Life. It never hurts to have more life, especially for end game pushes and PvP. Vitality is the best stat after the damage-dealing ones.
  4. Willpower - +1 ORDR, +1 Potency, and +1 Resistance. Potency increases the duration of harmful effects on enemies, while Resistance lowers the duration of harmful effects on you from enemies. Maybe one day in Diablo Immortal these durations will play a larger role, but currently they don't seem to matter much and are never prioritized.
  5. Intelligence - +1 ORDR. Gives nothing extra and is therefore the worst stat.

Magic Affixes

Because the total amount of attributes is so important, we rarely prioritize magic affixes on gear. Still, several magic affixes can make a difference, including Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Damage to Players (for PvP), or All Damage Increased. Check out our full Attribute and Magic Affix Guide and our Upgrading and Reforging Guide for more information.

Normal Gems

Secondary equipment slots allow you to use Normal gems. Maximizing these slots can help boost your Barbarian's power, but should not be prioritized over the total amount of attributes.

Red: Tourmaline > Ruby. Since Tourmaline gives Damage, it is usually your most important regular gem.

Blue: Sapphire > Aquamarine. When you begin to hit diminishing returns with Critical Hit Chance from Armor Penetration, Aquamarine is better.

Yellow: Citrine or Topaz. Both of these are bad, so use the highest level gem possible between the two.

Legendary Gems

Legendary Gems can be found as a reward after activating a Legendary Crest on an Elder Rift and killing the boss at the end. Many of them can also be crafted using Runes and Platinum at the Jeweler in Westmarch, which allows you to target one you have to rank it up. With the possibility of ranking up all the way to level 10, these gems increase in power each level and provide insane bonuses at high ranks. Some of these Gems give more powerful stat boosts and effects than others, but luckily there are many good options to choose from for the Barbarian. If you want to read up more on how these work check out our Legendary Gems Guide.

PvE

When fighting against monsters the following Gems provide the Barbarian with powerful effects and stat boosts that help decimate large packs of enemies. Many of these Gems are Damage focused while some can help improve your survivability, taking a few of each leads to a well-rounded character.

  1. Seeping Bile: +70 - 120% base attribute. Attacks have a 5% chance to poison enemies, inflicting 25% + 303 damage every second for 3 seconds. This poison spreads to nearby enemies if the victim dies. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 6 seconds.
    • The poison from this Gem is devastating in large densities, like Elder and Challenge Rifts. When shredding through enemies with a skill like Whirlwind, you'll get so many hits in quick succession that this Gem procs all over the place!
  2. Blessing of the Worthy: +70 - 120% base attribute. When you take damage, you have a 20% chance to unleash retribution on all nearby enemies, dealing damage equal to 10% of your maximum life. 15 second cooldown.
    • One of the best Legendary Gems for the Barbarian since you're constantly in melee range of enemies. As you chop away at them this blasts off every 15 seconds obliterating anything nearby turning you into a ticking time bomb.
  3. Howler’s Call: +70 - 120% base attribute. Primary Attacks have a 30% chance to summon a charging spirit wolf that inflicts 100% damage to all enemies in its path. 10 second cooldown.
    • This Gem provides massive damage in front of your character and can wipe out an entire room of enemies if they’re grouped together. Barbarians have plenty of opportunity to throw in a few Primary Attacks between cooldowns on their skills, so this Gem is great for providing a damage boost during that time.
  4. The Hunger: +40 - 50% base attribute. Heal 5% + 60 Life each time you kill an enemy.
    • This Gem is a great choice for the Barbarian since you're constantly taking damage. Combining this with Blessing of the Worthy leads to big heals every 15 seconds.
  5. Fervent Fang: +40 - 50% base attribute. Each attack you make against an enemy increases the damage it takes from your attacks by 0.75%, up to a maximum of 7.5% at 10 stacks.
    • This is one of the best single target Gems in the game and should always have a spot in any PvE build. As enemies get stronger and take longer to take down this Gem becomes even more valuable.
  6. Power & Command: +40 - 50% base attribute. Power and Command alternates states every 9 seconds. Power increases your Primary Attack damage by 7.5%. Command increases all other skill damage by 7.5%.
    • Many Barbarian variations have time when they use Primary attacks between their Skills. Timing your rotations with Power & Command is essential for maximizing your DPS.
  7. Lightning Core: +40 - 50% base attribute. Your attacks have a 10% chance to call chain lightning, inflicting 60% + 729 additional damage to all enemies near the target. This cannot occur more often than once every 15 seconds.
    • The chain lightning deals meaningful damage in high density, making it a powerful option.
  8. Seled’s Weakening: +20 - 25% base attribute. Gain 6.00% increased damage for 60 seconds after killing an Elite monster.
    • Not a bad Gem for starting out, but there are better options out there.
  9. Chained Death: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases damage done by your attacks by 1.50% per target hit, up to a maximum of 4.5% with 3 targets.
    • You'll be regularly hitting multiple targets with almost any Barbarian Build so this one provides a decent damage boost consistently.
  10. Berserker’s Eye: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases all damage you deal by 5.00%, but increases all damage you take by 6%.
    • Overall a decent DPS boost, but taking more damage while constantly in the heat of melee battle isn't always the best idea.
  11. Trickshot Gem: +20 - 25% base attribute. Your Channel Skills consume energy 10% slower.
    • This Gem works well with Whirlwind, especially if ranked up a bit.

These Gems should be replaced as soon as you get something from the list above: Bloody Reach, Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Cutthroat’s Grin, Lo’s Focused Gaze, Mocking Laughter, Nightmare Wreath, Pain of Subjugation, Respite Stone, Unity Crystal, Zod Stone.

PvP

The following Gems are amazing for PvP content. All of these gems are similar in that they provide a massive defensive boost for your character. Using the PvE list above, drop your least powerful Legendary Gems to pick up 2-3 of these when going into PvP.

  1. Phoenix Ashes: +70 - 120% base attribute. Prevents fatal damage, and then grants a shield for 6 seconds that absorbs 100% of your life in damage. When the shield expires, heal for 0% of the remaining value. 300 second cooldown.
    • This Gem is currently bugged and barely provides any use beyond it's stats, but once it’s fixed it'll likely be the best PvP Gem in the game! There might be unpredictable interactions between this Gem and Undying Rage even after a fix, so we'll have to see how it performs with more testing.
  2. Chip of Stoned Flesh: +70 - 120% base attribute. Your attacks have a 5% chance to petrify your target, Stunning them for 1 second. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 20 seconds.
    • Petrifying a target at the right moment can save your life, and the massive stat boost it provides makes it even stronger.
  3. Frozen Heart: +70 - 120% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies further than 3 yards away by 10%.
    • The damage reduction and base attribute boosts from this Gem make it fantastic for PvP. 10% damage reduction at rank 1 is no joke, this Gem when ranked up will be a ranged class's worst nightmare.
  4. Battleguard: +40 - 50% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies within 3 yards of you by 6.00%.
    • Not as good as Frozen Heart because the stats across the board are lower but this is a great filler Gem for PvP as you're constantly trying to close the gap between your foes.
  5. The Black Rose: +20 - 25% base attribute. Each time you are attacked, you have a 10% chance to summon vines that Immobilize the attack for 1.5 seconds. Each enemy cannot be affected by this more than once every 12 seconds.
    • Although this isn’t the greatest Gem in the game, the root can save your life if you need to escape a dangerous situation. When ranked up the immobilized duration increases as well, reaching a punishing 4.5 seconds at rank 10. Likewise, a fleeing enemy might get rooted and sentenced to death by this proc.
