Class Identity

The Crusader charges forward on their glorious celestial steed, leading your party with high Area of Effect (AoE) damage, incredible speed, and party-wide buffs. As a Crusader, you will quickly crush groups of weak enemies, as almost every skill at your disposal excels at AoE-based DPS.

This guide is your shield against the demonic hordes, teaching you to be the best Crusader possible. Let's get started!

Strengths

Crusaders are a melee and AoE damage based class with the fastest overall movement speed in the game. Most crusader builds rely on Draw and Quarter as their main skill to move around and deal damage. The Primary Attack given by Draw and Quarter when combined with Legendary Items such as Besieger and Bladed Jambeau, enable Draw and Quarter alone to demolish waves of enemies. If damage becomes a problem, the Crusader has defensive skills such as Punish for improved block chance, or Conjuration of Light to make you and your party invulnerable for a short duration. In a party, Crusaders can use Holy Banner, giving all nearby party members a 100% Critical Hit Chance for a short duration. Crusaders also fill a party role as a scout, dealing AoE damage to trash monsters, triggering events, and pulling enemies together. In PvP, Crusaders have an impressive kit of stuns, interrupts, and dashes, such as Sacred Chain, Shield Charge, or Falling Sword with Little Lance. Overall, Crusaders are a top-tier choice for their high AoE damage, incredible movement speed, impressive defensive skills, effective party-wide buffs, and wide array of PvP skills.

Weaknesses

The Crusader's reliance on Draw and Quarter exposes some weaknesses of the class. Draw and Quarter is vulnerable to stuns and interrupts, causing you to immediately lose the entire duration. Most builds with Draw and Quarter rely on casting other skills before casting Draw and Quarter, further decreasing your damage during stuns and interrupts for your entire build. Finally, using Draw and Quarter for movement means that when it is on cooldown, you have no options for escape. Since you are a melee class, relying only on Draw and Quarter for escape can make it easy to become trapped and make it difficult to dodge ranged attacks.

Crusaders have poor single target damage and high cooldown duration skills. This leads to many situations where all of your skills are on cooldown, leaving you with only your lackluster Primary Skill. As a result, certain bosses can be difficult to kill in Challenge Rifts.

Finally, as the scout for the party, you will be put in situations where you must push far ahead of the party in order to advance a dungeon. This can mean giving up a portion of loot that drops on the ground, since you are tasked with pushing forward. This results in about a 20% loss of the salvage materials when compared to other party members.

Starting Out

Starting your Crusader on the right foot is key in order to make your character as powerful as possible. Read our full Game Walkthrough for a comprehensive starter guide.

  • Find better equipment for your character. Your bag will flash when you pick up better equipment.
  • Upgrade your equipment at the Blacksmith. Turn on autopickup for all item types in settings and periodically return to town to salvage.
  • Unlock and use Draw and Quarter at level 13. When you cast Draw and Quarter, you can hold down the Primary Attack button to attack while moving at the same time.
  • Claim the Battlepass Legendary Item. This gives you an early Legendary Item that will increase your character's power. Choose wisely!
  • Hunt Legendary Items. Keep a special eye out for Sivket's Advantage, Karawan's Catch, Besieger, Bladed Jambeau, Pavise of Ten Wings, Bonebearer, and Tumult.
  • Find Normal Gems and Legendary Gems. Hidden Lairs have a chance to drop Normal Gems and if you use a Crest, Elder Rifts have a chance to drop Legendary Gems.
  • Unlock the Helliquary at level 41. Try to unlock the Helliquary as soon as you can so you can always receive Scoria from your daily Bounties.

Builds

  • Draw and Quarter - The Crusader's strongest build centers around the skill Draw and Quarter, enabling you to deal damage even while mounted on your celestial warhorse. All of the builds below are variants of the base Draw and Quarter build.
Solo Farming

Draw and Quarter + Karawan's Catch | Best for farming

The Karawan's Catch based variant gives the Crusader the ability to deal ALL damage while moving. You will devastate enemy groups so fast that you will need to plan routes around how fast you can pick up loot. Since you never stop moving, chaining massacre bonuses is easy. More massacre bonuses means more experience points, and fast monster kills means more loot! Moving from objective to objective with this variant simply becomes a question, "How many enemies do I want to kill along the way?"

Skills

Sacred Fire (Primary Attack) - Use for filler damage when all other skills are on cooldown.

Draw and Quarter - This build's main damage dealer and movement skill. Pop all other cooldowns before using this skill! Hold down your Primary Attack while moving to deal extra damage and trigger Primary Attack secondaries and family bonuses.

Sweep Attack - Does close-ranged AoE damage. Use when Draw and Quarter is on cooldown, or if you are saving Draw and Quarter for an important burst of speed to your next destination.

Consecrate - Does extra damage in an AoE centered on you, even while moving with Draw and Quarter.

Spinning Shield - Large AoE damage that can also move with Draw and Quarter.

SlotLegendary Item
Main-HandKarawan's Catch - Sweep Attack instead does a close-ranged AoE charge attack.
Off-HandPavise of Ten Wings - Spinning Shield instead spirals out from your character covering the entire screen for large-ranged AoE damage.
HelmMany-Eyed Aegis - Consecrate now moves with your character.
ShoulderSivket's Advantage - Draw and Quarter duration is increased by 20%. Important because it (in effect) increases the duration of other Draw and Quarter powers.
ChestBesieger - Draw and Quarter will randomly drop bombs on nearby enemies.
PantsBladed Jambeau - Draw and Quarter will now leave behind a trail of fiery in its wake. Lure enemies to run behind you to deal damage on the move.

Group Farming

Draw and Quarter + Holy Banner | Best for groups

The Holy Banner based variant allows the Crusader to deal high damage in groups while supporting and boosting party member's damage with Holy Banner. You will take on more of a scout and support role in groups, rather than filling the role as the group's primary damage dealer, although you will still have opportunities to deal damage.

Skills

Sacred Fire (Primary Attack) - Use for filler damage when all other skills are on cooldown.

Draw and Quarter - This build's main damage dealer and movement skill. Hold down your Primary Attack while moving to deal extra damage and trigger Primary Attack secondaries and family bonuses. Use Draw and Quarter more for movement speed than you would in solo in order to trigger, group, and spawn enemies for your party.

Sweep Attack - Does close-ranged AoE damage. Use when Draw and Quarter is on cooldown, or if you are saving Draw and Quarter for an important burst of speed to your next destination.

Holy Banner - Does a large group buff centered on your character, boosting your party member's Critical Hit Chance by 100%. Focus on keeping your entire party in the area of effect rather than purely doing damage with other abilities. Sometimes staying alive and allowing other party members to deal damage safely at range in this effect is smarter than trying to deal damage yourself.

Spinning Shield - Does AoE damage in a large circular motion across the entire map. In groups, this is critical for keeping your massacre bonus going, especially when you are scouting forward with Draw and Quarter to trigger spawns and group enemies.

SlotLegendary Item
Main-HandKarawan's Catch - Sweep attack instead does a close-ranged AoE charge attack.
Off-HandPavise of Ten Wings - Spinning Shield instead spirals out from your character covering the entire screen for large-ranged AoE damage.
HelmArrowkeeper - Holy Banner is now centered on your character. Also since the banner is now gone, it has the hidden effect of keeping the Critical Hit Chance bonus up at all times, instead of allowing the fragile banner to die to enemy attacks.
ShoulderSivket's Advantage - Draw and Quarter duration is increased by 20%. Important because it (in effect) increases the duration of other Draw and Quarter powers.
ChestBeseiger - Draw and Quarter will randomly drop bombs on nearby enemies.
PantsBladed Jambeau - Draw and Quarter will now leave behind a trail of fiery in its wake. Lure enemies to run behind you to deal damage on the move.
Boss Killing

Draw and Quarter + Bonebearer | Best for bosses

The Bonebearer variant packs deals significant damage with ranged AoE attacks while remaining safe. Unlike other Draw and Quarter based variants, this variant will require better positioning and grouping of packs of enemies, with the significant advantage of staying safely away from enemy attacks while you deal damage. You often need to "sit down" to deal damage, due to Bonebearer's 1 second wind-up time, which will require good positioning. Since Challenge Rift bosses and Helliquary bosses can require good positioning and avoiding damage, this variant is one of the best picks for these game modes.

Shield Glare - Does long-ranged AoE damage in a line. Use when Draw and Quarter is on cooldown or when you have a significant group of enemies to burn down.

Consecrate - Does extra damage in a large AoE. Drop this in the path of your enemies while you are grouping them. Since Consecrate in this builds stays in place, it is safer at a distance while dealing damage.

Falling Sword - Does large AoE damage, similar to Consecreate, but is also targetable at range. Falling Sword's AoE stays in place, making it safer at a distance while dealing damage.

SlotLegendary Item
Main-HandTumult - Falling Sword instead does a targetable large AoE.
Off-HandBonebearer - Shield Glare now fires a laser, doing AoE damage in a line. There is a significant wind-up cost of about 1 second before the laser fires.
HelmRedeemer's Mettle - Shield Glare radius is increased 20%. This widens the laser beam too with Bonebearer.
Challenge Rifts

Draw and Quarter + Bonebreaker | Best for bosses

The Bonebearer variant packs deals significant damage with ranged AoE attacks while remaining safe. Unlike other Draw and Quarter based variants, this variant will require better positioning and grouping of packs of enemies, with the significant advantage of staying safely away from enemy attacks while you deal damage. You often need to "sit down" to deal damage, due to Bonebearer's 1 second wind-up time, which will require good positioning. Since Challenge Rift bosses and Helliquary bosses can require good positioning and avoiding damage, this variant is one of the best picks for these game modes.

Shield Glare - Does long-ranged AoE damage in a line. Use when Draw and Quarter is on cooldown or when you have a significant group of enemies to burn down.

Consecrate - Does extra damage in an large AoE. Drop this in the path of your enemies while you are grouping them. Since Consecreate in this builds stays in place, it is safer at a distance while dealing damage.

PvP

Draw and Quarter Condemn | Best for PvP

The Condemn variant is an strong PvP build that centers around using all of your cooldowns before an engagement, using Draw and Quarter relentlessly to stun, and using Condemn to interrupt other players. While it has incredible burst damage, if you are knocked out of Draw and Quarter, your opponent gains a significant advantage. It also suffers after an engagement, as you will have no other escapes or mobility. This build must be played aggressively or ranged characters will pick you off before you can get close enough.

Skills

Sacred Fire (Primary Attack) - Use for filler damage when all other skills are on cooldown.

Draw and Quarter - This build's main damage dealer and movement skill. Use Consecrate and Spinning Shield before charging into combat. Hold down your Primary Attack while moving to deal extra damage and trigger Primary Attack secondaries and family bonuses. Charge in melee with enemies to stun them continuously.

Condemn - This is your primary interrupt for this build. Use this to close out a successfully engagement if your enemy needs just a bit more stun to kill. If another enemy has a long cooldown skill or charge skill, use this to interrupt them before quickly engaging them with stuns from Draw and Quarter.

Consecrate - Does extra damage in an AoE centered on you, even while moving with Draw and Quarter. Use this before combat to deal damage to anyone unlucky enough to engage with you.

Spinning Shield - Use this large AoE damage when moving with Draw and Quarter to hit enemies as you close the distance with them. It can also be used as a way to zone enemies away from you when you are standing on objectives.

SlotLegendary Item
Main-Hand This build can use any main hand.
ChestIron Suzerain - Condemn will now pull enemies towards you.
Pants(name?) - Draw and Quarter will now stun enemies when you charge into them. This can continuously stun an enemy if correctly positioned.

Skills

You can choose 1 Primary Attack and 4 Skills to use at a time. Primary Attacks have no cooldown and fill your Ultimate bar when used. When the Ultimate bar is full, you can cast the Ultimate ability. Skills automatically gain ranks as you level up and can be switched around anytime out of combat. Special endgame items called Charms add additional skill ranks that enhance their power. There are also Legendary Items that modify a skill's power. Let's look at the Crusader's skills in detail to understand how they work:

Stat Priorities

Attributes

Offense Rating and Defense Rating (ORDR) are the most important stats for all classes in Diablo Immortal. In order to maximize ORDR, prioritize the total amount of attributes on your gear. You gain 1 point of ORDR from every attribute point (Strength, Fortitude, Vitality, Willpower, Intelligence).

The Crusader's main stat is Strength, giving +4 Damage per point. All other things equal, use gear with Strength to maximize the damage you deal. Fortitude is also important early on because it gives you Armor Penetration (and therefore Critical Hit Chance), but becomes less important later due to diminishing returns on how much Critical Hit Chance you can gain.

Crusader's worst stat is Intelligence because it only gives +1 OR/DR. If possible, don't use it.

  1. Strength - +1 ORDR and +4 Damage.
  2. Fortitude - +1 ORDR, +6 Armor, and +6 Armor Penetration. Armor increases your chance to Block, which mitigates 20% of incoming damage. This is a nice defensive boost, especially when pushing Challenge Rifts or Helliquary bosses. Armor Penetration gives Critical Hit Chance, but it has diminishing returns at higher values.
  3. Vitality - +1 ORDR and +40 Life. It never hurts to have more life, especially for end game pushes and PvP. Vitality is the best stat after the damage-dealing ones.
  4. Willpower - +1 ORDR, +1 Potency, and +1 Resistance. Potency increases the duration of harmful effects on enemies, while Resistance lowers the duration of harmful effects on you from enemies. Maybe one day in Diablo Immortal these durations will play a larger role, but currently they don't seem to matter much and are never prioritized.
  5. Intelligence - +1 ORDR. Gives nothing extra and is therefore the worst stat.

Magic Affixes

Because the total amount of attributes is so important, we rarely prioritize magic affixes on gear. Still, several magic affixes can make a difference, including Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Damage to Players (for PvP), or All Damage Increased. For more information, check out our full Attribute and Magic Affix Guide!

Normal Gems

Secondary equipment slots allow you to use normal gems. Maximizing these slots can help boost your character's power, but should not be prioritized over the total amount of attributes.

Red: Tourmaline > Ruby. Since Tourmaline gives Damage, it is usually your most important normal gem.

Blue: Sapphire > Aquamarine. When you begin to hit diminishing returns with Critical Hit Chance from Armor Penetration, Aquamarine is better.

Yellow: Citrine OR Topaz. Both of these are bad, so use the highest level gem possible between the two.

Legendary Gems

Legendary Gems can be found as a reward after activating a Legendary Crest on an Elder Rift and killing the boss at the end. Many of them can also be crafted using Runes and Platinum at the Jeweler in Westmarch, which allows you to target one you have to rank it up. With the possibility of ranking up all the way to level 10, these gems increase in power each level and provide insane bonuses at high ranks. Some of these Gems give more powerful stat boosts and effects than others, but luckily there are many good options to choose from for the Crusader. If you want to read up more on how these work check out our Legendary Gems Guide.

PvE

When fighting against monsters the following Gems will provide the Crusader with powerful effects and stat boosts that destroy large packs of enemies. Many of these Gems are Damage focused while some can help improve your survivability.

  1. Seeping Bile: +70 - 120% base attribute. Attacks have a 5% chance to poison enemies, inflicting 25% + 303 damage every second for 3 seconds. This poison spreads to nearby enemies if the victim dies. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 6 seconds.
    • The poison from this Gem is devastating in large densities, like Elder and Challenge rifts.
  2. Blessing of the Worthy: +70 - 120% base attribute. When you take damage, you have a 20% chance to unleash retribution on all nearby enemies, dealing damage equal to 10% of your maximum life. 15 second cooldown.
    • One of the best Legendary Gems for the Crusader since you're constantly in melee range of enemies. As you chop away at them this will blast off every 15 seconds obliterating anything nearby turning you into a ticking time bomb.
  3. Howler’s Call: +70 - 120% base attribute. Primary Attacks have a 30% chance to summon a charging spirit wolf that inflicts 100% damage to all enemies in its path. 10 second cooldown.
    • This Gem provides massive damage in front of your character and can wipe out an entire room of enemies if they’re grouped together.
  4. The Hunger: +40 - 50% base attribute. Heal 5% + 60 Life each time you kill an enemy.
    • This Gem is a great choice for the Crusader since you're constantly taking damage. Combining this with Blessing of the Worthy will lead to big heals every 15 seconds.
  5. Fervent Fang: +40 - 50% base attribute. Each attack you make against an enemy increases the damage it takes from your attacks by 0.75%, up to a maximum of 7.5% at 10 stacks.
    • This is one of the best single target Gems in the game and should always have a spot in any PvE build. As enemies get stronger and take longer to take down this Gem becomes even more valuable.
  6. Power & Command: +40 - 50% base attribute. Power and Command alternates states every 9 seconds. Power increases your Primary Attack damage by 7.5%. Command increases all other skill damage by 7.5%.
    • Timing your rotations with Power & Command is essential for maximizing your DPS.
  7. Lightning Core: +40 - 50% base attribute. Your attacks have a 10% chance to call chain lightning, inflicting 60% + 729 additional damage to all enemies near the target. This cannot occur more often than once every 15 seconds.
    • The chain lightning deals meaningful damage in high density, making it a powerful option.
  8. Seled’s Weakening: +20 - 25% base attribute. Gain 6.00% increased damage for 60 seconds after killing an Elite monster.
    • Not a bad Gem for starting out, but there are better options out there.
  9. Chained Death: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases damage done by your attacks by 1.50% per target hit, up to a maximum of 4.5% with 3 targets.
    • You hit multiple targets with almost any Crusader Build so this one provides a decent damage boost.
  10. Berserker’s Eye: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases all damage you deal by 5.00%, but increases all damage you take by 6%.
    • Overall a decent DPS boost, but taking more damage while constantly in the heat of melee battle isn't always the best idea.
  11. Trickshot Gem: +20 - 25% base attribute. Your Channel Skills consume energy 10% slower.

These Gems should be replaced as soon as you get something from the list above: Bloody Reach, Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Cutthroat’s Grin, Lo’s Focused Gaze, Mocking Laughter, Nightmare Wreath, Pain of Subjugation, Respite Stone, Unity Crystal, Zod Stone.

PvP

The following Gems are amazing for PvP content. All of these gems are similar in that they provide a massive defensive boost for your character. Using the PvE list above, drop your least powerful Legendary Gems to pick up 2-3 of these when going into PvP.

  1. Phoenix Ashes: +70 - 120% base attribute. Prevents fatal damage, and then grants a shield for 6 seconds that absorbs 100% of your life in damage. When the shield expires, heal for 0% of the remaining value. 300 second cooldown.
    • This Gem is currently bugged and barely provides any kind of a shield, but once it’s fixed it'll likely be the best PvP Gem in the game.
  2. Chip of Stoned Flesh: +70 - 120% base attribute. Your attacks have a 5% chance to petrify your target, Stunning them for 1 second. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 20 seconds.
    • Petrifying a target at the right moment can save your life, and the massive stat boost it provides makes it even stronger.
  3. Frozen Heart: +70 - 120% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies further than 3 yards away by 10%.
    • The damage reduction and base attribute boosts from this Gem make it fantastic for PvP. 10% damage reduction at rank 1 is fantastic.
  4. Battleguard: +40 - 50% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies within 3 yards of you by 6.00%.
    • Not as good as Frozen Heart because the stats across the board are lower but this is a great filler Gem for PVP as you're constantly trying to close the gap between your foes.
  5. The Black Rose: +20 - 25% base attribute. Each time you are attacked, you have a 10% chance to summon vines that Immobilize the attack for 1.5 seconds. Each enemy cannot be affected by this more than once every 12 seconds.
    • Although this isn’t the greatest Gem in the game, the root can save your life if you need to escape a dangerous situation. When ranked up the immobilized duration increases as well, reaching a punishing 4.5 seconds at rank 10.
