Monk Guide

Class Identity

The Monk is a fast, agile melee fighter weaving attacks together to destroy their foes. They can engage in and escape from combat at light-speed, group enemies, and blow them up with various Area of Effect (AoE) abilities at their disposal. Meanwhile their presence is always welcome in groups for their ability to shield and buff party members, making them survive better in difficult fights. The combat is action-packed, you weave different skills together to create devastating combos while dashing around the battlefield to strike at the right targets. All this is done with the power of bare fists and sheer will a Monk is able to muster.

This guide will teach you how to become a warping combat machine that outmaneuvers and outplays their foes unlike any other class. Let's get started!

Strengths

Monks are a melee damage class with the biggest arsenal of group support skills in the game. This does not force you to assume a dedicated support role in parties; you can definitely carry your own weight quite easily, but it increases your viability and adds more exciting elements to the class. Even without going full support you can give up a skill slot for Shield of Zen or Inner Sanctuary (especially with Empathy's Blessing) to protect or buff your teammates.

Cyclone Strike is such an amazing skill to group up big packs of enemies that it is even worth using in solo play. The overall mobility of the Monk is high, with Mystic Strike being an unparalleled tool to dash around in any direction, allowing you to control the battlefield. To go even faster there are more options such as Flying Kick, Intervening Law, Reaching Rebuke, and even your primary attack Fists of Thunder that comes with extra utility. Meanwhile, you can dish out AoE damage with little effort by playing around Exploding Palm's devastating on-death explosions.

In PvP, you have the ability to quickly engage and crowd-control your enemies, taking them by surprise with Imprisoned Fist while shielding your team from incoming attacks. All in all, the Monk is a well-rounded class with a great toolkit and varying playstyles in different types of content.

Weaknesses

While the Monk has a great variety of skills available to them, most of them are situational which leads to them not being used often. Especially in solo farming content there is little variety in the setups because the DPS options are quite limited. While Exploding Palm is such a satisfying and powerful ability to use, it's almost always a standard pick that can hardly be replaced. Similarly, it's difficult to give up on the great mobility given by Mystic Strike because it contributes to the Monk's class identity in a big way.

The main single-target ability is Mystic Allies - a pet skill with a long cooldown that usually requires you to clean up most surrounding enemies before summoning them. If they get distracted or you can't even fit in the skill you can easily find yourself slowly chipping away at incredibly tanky bosses.

Lastly, you are required to sequence your skills in the right order for their most effective use, which both makes the class a bit more difficult to play and vulnerable to interrupts (especially in PvP). Luckily, most Monk skills have a rather short cooldown so you can get back into action quickly, nevertheless it's something to be aware about.

Starting Out as a Monk

Starting your Monk on the right foot is key in order to make your character as powerful as possible. Read our full Game Walkthrough for a comprehensive starter guide.

  • Find better equipment for your character. Your bag flashes when you pick up better equipment.
  • Upgrade your equipment at the Blacksmith. Turn on auto-pickup for all item types in settings and periodically return to town to salvage and upgrade your items.
  • Unlock Seven-Sided Strike, Mystic Strike and Exploding Palm (at levels 8, 15 & 24). These skills are great for blasting through the game.
  • Claim the Battle Pass Legendary Item. Earning Battle Points unlocks special rewards including an early Legendary Item that will increase your character's power. Choose wisely!
  • Hunt Legendary Items. Keep a special eye out for Storm Spirit, Rod of Echoes, The Open Mind and Dragon's Indignation.
  • Find Normal Gems and Legendary Gems. Hidden Lairs have a chance to drop Normal Gems and if you use a Crest, Elder Rifts have a chance to drop Legendary Gems.
  • Unlock the Helliquary at level 41. Unlock the Helliquary as soon as you can so you can always receive Scoria from your daily Bounties.

Monk Builds

Below you will find a variety of setups specialized for different endgame content. If you are just starting out, this won't be a great concern to you until a later point when you have finished the campaign and get ready to jump into the different types of content. For starters, the Solo Farming setup is designed to work well in any environment and should be considered the standard to work towards because this is what you will be doing and using most of the time.

Solo Farming

Concept

This setup achieves a balance between going fast and combines single-target with AoE attacks to make sure you can clear anything in your way reasonably well. Without any or just small changes you will be able to adjust to any activity you choose.

Skills & Items

Mystic Strike - An almost indispensable movement skill that also deals damage, pulls enemies and can charge up for multiple uses.

Exploding Palm - Whenever you are fighting more than one enemy and finish another, this will hit like a truck with added value when you have more enemies around you.

Seven-Sided Strike - A great mix between single-target and AoE that can finish off dispersed enemies and trigger Exploding Palm with ease.

Cyclone Strike - Groups up enemies unlike almost any other ability in the game. Can be charged up for bigger effect.

Fists of Thunder (Primary) - The standard primary attack skill. It allows you to do a short-range teleport, saving valuable cooldowns for that purpose while adding a bit of DPS.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandDragon's Indignation - Seven-sided Strike turns to Fire, with additional Burning effect.
Off-HandEye of the Storm - Cyclone Strike radius increased by 20%.
HelmCrippling Insight - Exploding Palm maximum charges increased by 1.
ShoulderDiscipline's Weight - Seven-Sided Strike damage increased by 10%.
ChestAny Chest
PantsPath of the Storm - Cyclone Strike also temporarily reduces all damage you take by 20%.

Gameplay

In general, your gameplay will revolve around a 12-second cycle. All the chosen skills' cooldowns align in that time window, so you want to make sure you combine them for maximum effect and then move on. Depending on the content, you can easily leave some stray survivors behind and rather focus on the next fresh pack.

  1. Use Mystic Strike as much as possible for extra mobility to reach your destination. In boss fights, keep at least one charge ready at all times so that you can dodge incoming attacks.
  2. Drag enemies along to make a larger pull. Once you have decided where to fight, group everything up with Cyclone Strike.
  3. Apply Exploding Palm once or twice to the weaker enemies in the pull.
  4. Pop the Palms with Seven-Sided Strike. If necessary, keep punching and reapply Exploding Palm for more booms.
  5. Either finish off whatever is left with a similar rotation or move on to the next spot. On high HP targets like elites and bosses, use Fists of Thunder as much as possible while waiting for cooldowns.

Other Setups

  • There are many ways to use this standard setup and change it up with some legendary inscriptions or simply switching a single skill on the fly to improve it in one way or another for an upcoming challenge.
  • Depending on which legendary items you may find and whether you need more damage or more grouping, you can adjust the setup by switching either Seven-Sided Strike or Cyclone Strike with another skill.
  • If you don't care much about grouping enemies and have access to Storm Spirit, you can use Cyclone Strike as a powerful AoE-damage ability instead.
  • For more single-target damage (in Dungeons, Helliquary, Rifts): Add Mystic Allies to the setup. They will greatly reduce the time needed to finish off high HP targets.
  • For more group utility: Include Inner Sanctuary or Shield of Zen for damage reduction, shields or (with Empathy's Blessing) increased group damage.
  • For speedrunning very easy content Flying Dragon is great to move yourself and enemies around even more.
  • A pure DPS alternative to Seven-Sided Strike is Wave of Light, especially when combined with Radiant Sun.
Group Farming

Concept

Here your main focus is on speed, grouping enemies and being generally useful to the team. You are rushing ahead to prepare for the rest of the team to arrive to a stacked up pull of enemies while contributing a bit of damage yourself.

Mystic Allies - They are great for single-target to nuke down bosses and don't leave you helpless when on your own.

Main-HandRod of Echoes - Mystic Allies cooldown reduced by 15%.
Off-HandEye of the Storm - Cyclone Strike radius increased by 20%.
HelmThe Open Mind - Mystic Allies damage increased by 10%.
ShoulderAny Shoulders
ChestAny Chest
PantsPath of the Storm - Cyclone Strike also temporarily reduces all damage you take by 20%.

Gameplay

You want to move quickly and make sure to be a valuable addition to the team by increasing their damage output through your grouping. Be thoughtful of where to stop and when to use your abilities for the greatest benefit of the team.

  1. Use Mystic Strike as much as possible for extra mobility to reach your destination. In boss fights keep at least one charge ready at all times so that you can dodge incoming attacks.
  2. Drag enemies along to make a larger pull. Once you have decided where to fight, group everything up with Cyclone Strike.
  3. Apply Exploding Palm once or twice to the weaker enemies in the pull.
  4. Let your teammates pop the Palms or do it with your own attacks and Mystic Allies.

  • Depending on what exactly your group is doing and how often you split up you can also focus more on your own damage by switching either Mystic Allies or Cyclone Strike with Seven-Sided Strike or Wave of Light.
  • In difficult boss fights (esp. in Helliquary), Inner Sanctuary or Shield of Zen are great for damage reduction or shielding.
  • If you have Empathy's Blessing, you should definitely include Inner Sanctuary to buff your team with more damage (instead of Exploding Palm or Mystic Allies).
  • For speedrunning very easy content Flying Dragon is great to move yourself and enemies around even more (instead of Mystic Allies).
Boss Killing

Concept

The Helliquary, Path of Blood and Kion's Ordeal all require you to fight difficult bosses that often demand special considerations. These bosses tend to hit extremely hard and will test your ability to survive as you chip away at them. With this in mind you'll set yourself up more defensively so you're not just in the dirt right away.

Skills & Items

Mystic Strike - An almost indispensable movement skill that also deals damage, pulls enemies and can charge up for multiple uses. While it doesn't have great offensive value in boss fights, it can be a great tool to move out of danger quickly and resume DPS.

Seven-Sided Strike - A decent single-target ability that also provides full damage immunity during its animation. Can be used both offensively or defensively with the right timing.

Mystic Allies - They are great for single-target to nuke down bosses and should especially be used when only the main target is present.

Cyclone Strike - With the Storm Spirit inscription this becomes a powerful damage ability.

Fists of Thunder (Primary) - The standard primary attack skill. It allows you to do a short-range teleport, saving valuable cooldowns for that purpose while adding a bit of DPS.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandRod of Echoes - Mystic Allies cooldown reduced by 15%.
Off-HandEye of the Storm - Cyclone Strike radius increased by 20%.
HelmThe Open Mind - Mystic Allies damage increased by 10%.
ShoulderDiscipline's Weight - Seven-Sided Strike damage increased by 10%.
ChestStorm Spirit - Cyclone Strike now generates a powerful tornado that continually damages all nearby enemies.
PantsPath of the Storm - Cyclone Strike also temporarily reduces all damage you take by 20%.

Gameplay

Unless you completely outgear the bosses already, you will struggle to survive while trying to optimize your DPS. As a general rule you should avoid taking unnecessary damage as much as possible, which is usually rather easy to do if you rely on kiting, dodging and using mostly your long cooldown abilities to deal damage.

  1. Keep Mystic Strike ready to dodge incoming attacks as much as possible. In tough boss fights you can save valuable healing potions simply with good movement. Avoiding certain abilities that stun or interrupt you can actually lead to a DPS increase.
  2. Activate Cyclone Strike when you are sure the target will stay in its area of effect for around 6 seconds. This can also be used to clear potential adds regularly.
  3. Summon your Mystic Allies, if possible when there's only your main target present. They have a short duration, so clean up before if you can.
  4. Use Seven-Sided Strike on cooldown for more damage. In some cases it can be wise to delay it up to a few seconds to use its immunity phase for an incoming attack.
  5. Make sure you don't run out of health (potions). If you get into big trouble, focus on dodging entirely and only deal damage with your long cooldowns.
  6. Whenever you have time to spare, use Fists of Thunder while waiting for cooldowns. Activate the ultimate when there are a lot of adds or you need the shield.

Other Setups

  • If you don't have Storm Spirit yet, Cyclone Strike can be replaced with different skills such as Exploding Palm (for bosses with lots of adds), Wave of Light (general DPS increase) or Shield of Zen (for long dangerous fights).
  • In groups, Inner Sanctuary can be a great addition to either decrease damage taken, allowing everyone to ignore most incoming attacks for a while, or to buff damage done with Empathy's Blessing.
Challenge Rifts

Concept

Challenge Rifts are all about being well-rounded so that you can survive, deal with large packs of monsters as well as avoid painfully long boss fights.

Mystic Allies - They are great for single-target to nuke down bosses and should especially be used when only the main target is present.

Off-HandScolding Storm - Exploding Palm is now icy and inflicts Chill.
HelmThe Open Mind - Mystic Allies damage increased by 10%.
ShoulderDiscipline's Weight - Seven-Sided Strike damage increased by 10%.
ChestBreath of Incense - Seven-Sided Strike can now trigger the Exploding Palm explosion when it kills Bleeding enemies.
PantsAny Pants

Gameplay

To complete rifts in a timely and efficient manner, you want to group up large packs of enemies and nuke them down together. It's important (especially while pushing to your limit) to find the right balance and not bite off more than you can chew. In general, rush past a few enemies to make them follow you, stay out of melee range while grouping them up, then unleash your combos, rinse and repeat.

  1. Use Mystic Strike for extra mobility to explore and engage lots of enemies. Always keep at least one charge ready so that you can get out of danger or dodge incoming attacks.
  2. Drag enemies along to make a larger pull. Make sure you don't lose some on the way when you run really far.
  3. Once you are ready to fight, apply Exploding Palm once or twice to the weaker enemies in the pull.
  4. Pop the Palms with Seven-Sided Strike. If necessary, keep punching and reapply Exploding Palm for more booms.
  5. When there are elites around, also use Mystic Allies for extra DPS after most of the trash monsters are taken care of.
  6. Either finish off whatever is left with a similar rotation or move on to the next spot. On high HP targets like elites and bosses, use Fists of Thunder as much as possible while waiting for cooldowns.

Other Setups

  • Mystic Strike is not strictly necessary and could be replaced for another DPS skill such as Wave of Light or even a defensive skill such as Shield of Zen.
  • To reduce incoming damage more, Imprisoned Fist can be very useful to keep enemies at a distance while you prepare to nuke.
  • In groups, Inner Sanctuary can be a great addition to either decrease damage taken, allowing everyone to ignore most incoming attacks for a while, or to buff damage done with Empathy's Blessing.
  • If you want to go full support, you can drop most of your damage skills to include defense and crowd-control effects while your team deals with the enemies. Shield of Zen, Imprisoned Fist and Cyclone Strike are wonderful additions to any coordinated team.
PvP

Concept

Due to the nature of PvP there will certainly be multiple builds that can thrive and be successful. In general, it's always useful to have a lot of mobility, crowd control and the ability to do quick bursts or react to incoming attacks with defensive tools. Maximizing speed or DPS is not nearly as important as it is for PvE content and the following setup can definitely be adjusted in many ways.

Important: Even though for PvE content stacking Offense Rating and Defense Rating (ORDR) is the number one priority as these stats directly limited you in the content you are able to clear, they are not nearly as important in PvP (see our post on stats here). This means that you can and should collect items that have more favorable magic affixes and stat distribution and don't necessarily have to follow the rule that "more equals better" as is usually the case, given the choices are reasonably close in their overall power. For example, since defense is more important here and you will be taken to the brink of death regularly, Vitality has a much bigger value than usual while Fortitude is almost useless due to the Critical Hit Chance cap in PvP.

Skills & Items

Mystic Strike - An indispensable movement skill that also deals damage and can charge up for multiple uses.

Imprisoned Fist - Especially in team combat and against ranged classes, landing a successful 5 second immobilize can be a death sentence. Likewise, it's great to make an escape or heal up with bandages against a melee opponent.

Seven-Sided Strike - Has great damage while also making you invincible for its duration. This will be your main nuke ability.

Wave Strike - While generally not great in PvE, here it can be used as a ranged attack while staying out of range or waiting for cooldowns. The knockback is helpful to disperse the enemy team, too. More advanced players should use Shield of Zen (especially when combined with Purity's Thought).

Fists of Thunder (Primary) - The standard primary attack skill. It allows you to do a short-range teleport, saving valuable cooldowns for that purpose while adding a bit of DPS.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandIce Upon the Blossom - Seven-Sided Strike turns to Ice damage with Chilling effect.
Off-HandAny Off-Hand
HelmPurity's Thought - Shield of Zen now also dispels a harmful effect from the target.
ShoulderThe First Wind - Each hit of Seven-sided Strike also temporarily reduces all damage you take.

Gameplay

Avoid jumping into the middle without thought. You are a Monk and relying on your swiftness and your team is the key to success! The following is not a rotation or order of priority, rather use your abilities as necessary. Be aware of whom and what you're fighting, what their own abilities are, when they have used and whether you have to play around some of their cooldowns.

  1. Use Mystic Strike for mobility and to engage, dodge attacks and disengage again. Your enemy is most likely counting your uses and will know when you are slow and vulnerable, so don't waste your charges! If you are confident in a fast victory, you can also dash in with multiple charges to take them by surprise.
  2. Use Wave Strike when you are not ready for melee combat yet or to knock the enemies in opposite directions to give your team an opening. Be aware that your enemy might expect this to come their way and it might be dodged, so try to surprise them!
  3. Use Imprisoned Fist to get a hold on a target and unleash your (and your team's) attacks on it. This should be your opener after you managed to close the gap to your target. Be aware that this is not incapacitating your enemy, so they can still strike back during this effect! Defensively, it can be a great tool to make an escape and heal up.
  4. Use Seven-Sided Strike to deal damage. If you can predict an enemy attack, you can even avoid it entirely with its immunity phase, and your enemy will most likely more freely use their own abilities when they know it's on cooldown. Timing is everything!
  5. Use Fists of Thunder to deal extra damage and for more short-range teleports. This isn't a high priority as you generally want to play around your cooldowns.

Especially in team combat there is a lot more going and a lot more strategy involved than in a simple 1v1. Make sure you understand what you're up against and use your abilities with the greatest effect and in the right moment instead of whenever you can. You have amazing tools at your disposal to dictate the pace of the fight, use them to your advantage and retreat when necessary to heal up!

Other Setups

  • Wave Strike can easily be replaced with another skill if the ranged playstyle is impractical. Cyclone Strike can be great to gather the enemy team before an Imprisoned Fist, Flying Kick is another tool for mobility and to engage, Mystic Allies can be added to cause more chaos on the battlefield.
  • Another replacement is Shield of Zen, an incredible defensive tool in PvP. When combined with Purity's Thought to remove harmful effects this skill alone can turn a whole fight around when used in the right moment. It can be used for your own benefit or to save a teammate. For more advanced players, this should definitely be included.
  • Legendary items with slow effects such as Solace of the Peaks and Ice Upon the Blossom can be great to keep your opponent from escaping even without the use of Imprisoned Fist.
  • Tranquility's Gaze and Storm Spirit allow you to create powerful area-denial combos to force the enemy into specific locations or keep them at a distance.
  • With Freedom's Gaze you are able to stun nearby enemies instead of simply immobilizing them with Imprisoned Fist.

Monk Skills

You can choose 1 Primary Attack and 4 Skills to use at a time. Primary Attacks have no cooldown and fill your Ultimate bar when used. When the Ultimate bar is full, you can cast the Ultimate ability. Skills automatically gain ranks as you level up and can be switched around anytime out of combat. Special endgame items called Charms add additional skill ranks that enhance their power. There are also Legendary Items that modify a skill's power. Below you will find all the Monk's skills in detail to understand how they work:

Best Use: Protects you and your allies in team-PvP. With good timing the crowd-control immunity allows you to freely finish your own combos and unleash destruction on your foes!

SlotLegendary Item
Main-HandIntervening Law - Shield of Zen now charges to a designated spot, granting you and nearby allies a shield that absorbs damage.
Fires of Peace - Shield of Zen doesn't shield you anymore, but periodically deals damage to nearby enemies.
HelmPurity's Thought - Shield of Zen now also dispels a harmful effect from the target.
TBDEnlightenment's Blessing - During Shield of Zen you can move unhindered through enemies.

Wave of Light

Unlocked: Level 29
Cooldown: 9 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% damage
Type(s): Damage

Description: Crush enemies in an area with a focused Wave of Light, dealing damage. Maximum 2 charges.

Best Use: Great for bursting down large packs of small monsters, especially when both charges are used together. Similarly, the damage can be spread out between different packs to increase clearspeed when one is enough.

SlotLegendary Item
ShouldersHeaven's Bonds - Wave of Light now drops a golden bell from the sky, confining all enemies.
ChestHarmony's Song - Wave of Light range increased by X%.
PantsChastising Radiance - Wave of Light damage increased by 10%.
TBDRadiant Sun - Wave of Light now summons an Echo Bell, inflicting continuous damage on all nearby enemies.

Wave Strike

Unlocked: Level 3
Cooldown: 9 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% damage
Type(s): Damage | Charge

Description: : Unleash a wave of energy, carrying enemies hit within it and exploding for damage to all nearby enemies at its maximum range. Charging longer increases range and damage. When fully charged, the waves will also knock enemies away.

Best Use: Generally has little use in PvE as the charge-up takes too long and interrupts the fast-paced flow of Monk combat with too little of a benefit while the knockback actively hurts DPS. The skill has some merit in PvP as a more defensive attack option that can be used at range without getting into the fray, but players can predict the wave and dodge it.

SlotLegendary Item
Main-HandUnshakable Weight - Wave Strike range increased by 20%.
Off-HandPower of Undulation - Wave Strike now continuously channels energy waves forward.
Roar of the Sea - Wave Strike now quickly gathers energy and generates Wave Explosion.
ChestResounding Soul - Wave Strike damage increased by 10%.

Monk Stat Priorities

Attributes

Offense Rating and Defense Rating (ORDR) are the most important stats for all classes in Diablo Immortal. In order to maximize ORDR, prioritize the total amount of attributes on your gear. You gain 1 point of ORDR from every attribute point (Strength, Fortitude, Vitality, Willpower, Intelligence).

The Monk's main stat is Strength, giving +4 Damage per point. All other things equal, use gear with Strength to maximize the damage you deal. Fortitude is also important early on because it gives you Armor Penetration (which translates to Critical Hit Chance), but becomes less important later due to diminishing returns on how much Critical Hit Chance you can gain.

The Monk's worst stat is Intelligence because it only gives +1 ORDR. If possible, don't use it.

  1. Strength - +1 ORDR and +4 Damage.
  2. Fortitude - +1 ORDR, +6 Armor, and +6 Armor Penetration. Armor increases your chance to Block, which mitigates 20% of incoming damage. This is a nice defensive boost, especially when pushing Challenge Rifts or fighting Helliquary bosses. Armor Penetration gives Critical Hit Chance, but it has diminishing returns at higher values.
  3. Vitality - +1 ORDR and +40 Life. It never hurts to have more life, especially for end game pushes and PvP. Vitality is the best stat after the damage-dealing ones.
  4. Willpower - +1 ORDR, +1 Potency, and +1 Resistance. Potency increases the duration of harmful effects on enemies, while Resistance lowers the duration of harmful effects on you from enemies. Generally this is not prioritized because both cases happen too infrequently.
  5. Intelligence - +1 ORDR. Gives nothing extra for melee classes and is therefore the worst stat.

Magic Affixes

Because the total amount of attributes is so important, we rarely prioritize magic affixes on gear. Still, several magic affixes can make a difference, including Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Damage to Players (for PvP), Movement Speed, Cooldown Reduction or All Damage Increased. For more information, check out our full Attribute and Magic Affixes Guide!

Normal Gems

Secondary equipment slots (the ones you see on the left side when opening your character loadout) allow you to use normal gems. Maximizing these slots can help boost your character's power, but should not be prioritized over the total amount of attributes.

Red: Tourmaline > Ruby. Since Tourmaline gives Damage, it is usually your most important normal gem.

Blue: Sapphire > Aquamarine. When you begin to hit diminishing returns with Critical Hit Chance from Armor Penetration, Aquamarine is better.

Yellow: Citrine OR Topaz. Both of these are bad, so use the highest level gem possible between the two.

Legendary Gems

Legendary Gems can be found as a reward after activating a Legendary Crest on an Elder Rift and killing the boss at the end. Many of them can also be crafted using Runes and Platinum at the Jeweler in Westmarch, which allows you to target one you want to rank it up. With the possibility of ranking up all the way to level 10, these gems increase in power each level and provide insane bonuses at high ranks. Some of these Gems give more powerful stat boosts and effects than others, but luckily there are many good options to choose from for the Monk.

PvE

When fighting against monsters, the following Gems will provide the Monk with powerful effects and stat boosts that will help decimate large packs of enemies. Many of these Gems are damage-focused while some can help improve your survivability, taking a few of each will lead to a well-rounded character. Here is a general order of priority in cases

  1. Seeping Bile: +70 - 120% base attribute. Attacks have a 5% chance to poison enemies, inflicting 25% + 303 damage every second for 3 seconds. This poison spreads to nearby enemies if the victim dies. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 6 seconds.
  2. Blessing of the Worthy: +70 - 120% base attribute. When you take damage, you have a 20% chance to unleash retribution on all nearby enemies, dealing damage equal to 10% of your maximum life. 15 second cooldown.
    • One of the best Legendary Gems for the Monk since you're constantly in melee range of enemies. As you chop away at them this will blast off every 15 seconds obliterating anything nearby turning you into a ticking time bomb.
  3. Howler’s Call: +70 - 120% base attribute. Primary Attacks have a 30% chance to summon a charging spirit wolf that inflicts 100% damage to all enemies in its path. 10 second cooldown.
    • This Gem provides massive damage in front of your character and can wipe out an entire room of enemies if they’re grouped together.
  4. The Hunger: +40 - 50% base attribute. Heal 5% + 60 Life each time you kill an enemy.
    • This Gem is a great choice for the Monk since you're constantly taking damage. While it's purely defensive in nature, the healing can be a great boon in rifts or prolonged farming situations, allowing you to play much more aggressively than otherwise possible.
  5. Fervent Fang: +40 - 50% base attribute. Each attack you make against an enemy increases the damage it takes from your attacks by 0.75%, up to a maximum of 7.5% at 10 stacks.
    • This is the best single target Gem in the game and great to finish long boss fights faster. It doesn't shine in farming content but really shows its potential on higher difficulties.
  6. Power & Command: +40 - 50% base attribute. Power and Command alternates states every 9 seconds. Power increases your Primary Attack damage by 7.5%. Command increases all other skill damage by 7.5%.
    • This Gem is great when you time your cooldowns with its effect for even more damage.
  7. Lightning Core: +40 - 50% base attribute. Your attacks have a 10% chance to call chain lightning, inflicting 60% + 729 additional damage to all enemies near the target. This cannot occur more often than once every 15 seconds.
    • The chain lightning deals meaningful damage in high density, making it a powerful option. Especially in farming content it's great as it can finish entire packs on its own.
  8. Seled’s Weakening: +20 - 25% base attribute. Gain 6.00% increased damage for 60 seconds after killing an Elite monster.
    • Decent Gem for starting out, but usually replaced down the line.
  9. Chained Death: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases damage done by your attacks by 1.50% per target hit, up to a maximum of 4.5% with 3 targets.
    • Most abilities are able to hit multiple targets so this Gem will provide a decent damage boost consistently outside of boss fights.
  10. Berserker’s Eye: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases all damage you deal by 5.00%, but increases all damage you take by 6%.
    • Overall a decent DPS boost, but taking more damage while constantly in the heat of melee battle isn't always the best idea and in content where your survivability really matters (esp. PvP & Challenge Rifts) it should be avoided.

These Gems should be replaced as soon as you get something from the list above: Bloody Reach, Ca'arsen's Invigoration, Cutthroat’s Grin, Lo’s Focused Gaze, Mocking Laughter, Nightmare Wreath, Pain of Subjugation, Respite Stone, Trickshot Gem, Unity Crystal, Zod Stone.

PvP

The following Gems are amazing for PvP content. All of these Gems are similar in that they provide a massive defensive boost for your character. Using the PvE list above, drop your least powerful Legendary Gems to pick up 2-3 of these when going into PvP.

  1. Phoenix Ashes: +70 - 120% base attribute. Prevents fatal damage, and then grants a shield for 6 seconds that absorbs 100% of your life in damage. When the shield expires, heal for 0% of the remaining value. 300 second cooldown.
    • Getting a second chance is massive in PvP and with the shield you can turn around a fight you'd otherwise lose. Even though it has a long cooldown it carries its weight easily.
  2. Chip of Stoned Flesh: +70 - 120% base attribute. Your attacks have a 5% chance to petrify your target, Stunning them for 1 second. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 20 seconds.
    • Petrifying a target at the right moment can save your life or allow you to finish them, and the massive stat boost it provides makes it even stronger.
  3. Frozen Heart: +70 - 120% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies further than 3 yards away by 10%.
    • The damage reduction and base attribute boosts from this Gem make it fantastic for PvP. 10% damage reduction at rank 1 is no joke, this Gem when ranked up will be a ranged class's worst nightmare.
  4. Battleguard: +40 - 50% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies within 3 yards of you by 6%.
    • Not as good as Frozen Heart because the stats across the board are lower but this is a great filler Gem for PvP as you're constantly trying to close the gap between you and your foes.
  5. The Black Rose: +20 - 25% base attribute. Each time you are attacked, you have a 10% chance to summon vines that Immobilize the attacker for 1.5 seconds. Each enemy cannot be affected by this more than once every 12 seconds.
    • Although this isn’t the greatest Gem in the game, the root can save your life if you need to escape a dangerous situation. When ranked up, the immobilized duration increases as well, reaching a punishing 4.5 seconds at rank 10. Likewise, a fleeing enemy might get rooted and sentenced to death by this proc.
