Class Identity

Wizards are the pure spell caster class, wielding elemental magic with high Area of Effect (AoE) and Crowd Control (CC) to stop their enemies. This class is for strategic players that enjoy spell synergy combos, control over opponents, skill shots, and devastating damage. If you decide to continue, this is your guide for learning how to become the Greatest Wizard in the WorldTM. Put on your Wizard hat and robe and let's get started!

Strengths

Wizards can be played with ranged spells to deal damage from afar safely, or Battlemage style up close. Their iconic movement skill, Teleport, is used to instantly reposition during combat or traverse long distances quickly. Black Hole groups hordes of enemies together so they can all be hit with the Wizard's arsenal of AoE spells. Skill synergies increase the Wizard's capabilities. Hungering Wind (Arcane Wind) cast on burning ground creates a Firestorm that does 50% more damage. Ice Crystal reflects Ray of Frost and Disintegrate beams to every enemy nearby, increasing coverage and range.

In Player vs. Player (PvP), Wizards are a flexible class with different playstyles and skill options. Control builds turn the tides of a battlefield for victory. They have an arsenal of CC skills that stun, freeze, chill and knockback. Duration AoE skills like Meteor Shower (Meteor) and Hungering Wind (Arcane Wind) are used to zone opponents off objectives. Battlemage builds can be used to rack up the kill count if you prefer to get aggressive. Flaming Orbs (Scorch) and Ice Storm (Ice Armor) can be precasted before Teleporting on your opponent with Riftdancer's Stride to deal insane burst damage. Your opponents won't even know what killed them!

Weaknesses

Wizard skills tend to have long cooldowns. Strategic use of these cooldowns is important, especially for skills that benefit from being used together in combination. This is an Intelligence based class so you need to play accordingly.

Wizards lack group buffs. The only benefit they can give teammates is 10% extra damage from Disintegrate. Their class consumable Scroll of Westmarch is worthless, while the other class consumables provide buffs to teammates.

In PvP, Wizards are quite squishy and rely on hit-and-run tactics with Teleport to survive. The majority of their spells are skillshots (requiring precise aim). Poor aim or execution resulting in a missed attack can easily get you killed. You need to react quickly and accurately in battles to be a great Wizard.

Starting Out As Wizard

Starting your Wizard on the right foot is key in order to make your character as powerful as possible. Read our full Game Walkthrough for a comprehensive starter guide.

  • Find better equipment for your character. Your bag flashes when you pick up better equipment.
  • Upgrade your equipment at the Blacksmith. Turn on auto pick up for all item types in settings and periodically return to town to salvage.
  • Combo Arcane Wind after Scorch at level 1. Burn enemies with Scorch first, so Arcane Wind does 50% more damage.
  • Claim the Battlepass Legendary Item. This gives you an early Legendary Item that increases your character's power. Choose wisely!
  • Hunt Legendary Items. Keep a special eye out for The Siphon, Unrepentant Gale, and Windshaper.
  • Find Normal Gems and Legendary Gems. Hidden Lairs have a chance to drop Normal Gems and if you use a Crest, Elder Rifts have a chance to drop Legendary Gems.
  • Unlock the Helliquary at level 41. Unlock the Helliquary as soon as you can so you can always receive Scoria from your daily Bounties.

Wizard Builds

Firestorm Battlemage - Solo & Group Speed

Firestorm Battlemage - Solo & Group Speed Build

- created by Lexyu

For speed farming we maximize movement speed, which for the Wizard means we pick up Teleport and Lightning Nova with The Siphon. These skills help us jump between mob packs and traverse areas faster. Teleport gains damage from both Riftdancer's Stride and Lyan's Resonant Wisdom, allowing you to jump on enemies offensively. Meteor and Arcane Wind are used together for Firestorm synergy.

Skills & Items

Meteor - A staple Wizard skill due to its powerful AoE impact and moderate cooldown. Learn to aim and time the delay while dragging enemies.

Arcane Wind - The Hungering Wind inscription deals the most total damage over time. Cast it on the burning ground left by Meteor to create a Firestorm, dealing 50% more damage.

Teleport - Our strongest movement skill that can jump over obstacles. Teleport on top of enemies to engage and instantly deal high damage. Manage your charges well, using one to engage enemies and the rest to move between packs.

Lightning Nova - Dual purpose skill with a low cooldown. Use for both quick damage in combat and movement speed while traversing. Cast on top of enemies for more hits.

Magic Missile (Primary) - The extra single target damage is needed for bosses and any remaining enemies surviving your AoE spells. Try to stand next to the enemy with the highest health in a group so your missiles hit it.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandWindshaper - Arcane Wind now summons a Tornado that follows enemies and continually damages all enemies in its path.
Off-HandThe Siphon - Casting Lightning Nova temporarily increases your movement speed by 20%.
HelmLyan's Resonant Wisdom - Teleport now conjures a lightning cloud at your destination, dealing damage to all nearby enemies over 2.5 seconds.
ShoulderShoulders of the Cataclysm - Meteor damage increased by 10%.
ChestStarcaller's Drapery - Meteor radius increased by 20%.
PantsRiftdancer's Stride - Teleport now targets a location where it also damages all nearby enemies.

Gameplay

Speed farming builds are made to move fast and destroy groups of enemies quickly. Battlemage playstyle involves using Teleport offensively to jump right on top of your enemies and fighting at close range. Mechanics to manage:

  1. Teleport on enemies to engage and deal damage. Don't use excessively. Save some charges for faster travel.
  2. Lightning Nova is your shortest cooldown at 6 seconds. Use liberally for both damage and faster movement. Cast after teleporting on top of enemies to maximize hits.
  3. Drop Meteor, followed by Arcane Wind on the burning ground to create a Firestorm. This is your most damaging skill combination. Even though this is a Battlemage build, you can still use these skills at range if needed.
  4. Magic Missile has decent single target damage. Spam it to finish off stragglers and high health enemies.

Other Setups

  • Scorch with Phoenix Mantle can replace Meteor and still provide burning ground for Firestorm.
  • Unrepentant Gale is useful for creating 2 Firestorms at once, at the cost of losing movement speed from The Siphon. Good swap to increase damage for boss killing.
  • For group play, Lightning Nova can be dropped for Black Hole for grouping utility. Not an ideal swap if you find yourself being left behind often.
Firestorm - Challenge Rift

Black Hole Firestorm - Challenge Rift Build

- created by Lexyu

For pushing Challenge Rifts we prioritize grouping enemies up and dealing AoE damage. Good thing Wizard has one of the best grouping abilities in the game, Black Hole. Similar to the Firestorm Battlemage Speed Build, Meteor and Arcane Wind are used together for Firestorm synergy.

Skills & Items

Black Hole - Amazing AoE skill that groups and crowd controls enemies.

Manage your charges well, using some to move quickly but always save one in case you get stuck.

Magic Missile (Primary) - The extra single target damage is needed for Rift Guardians.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandWindshaper - Arcane Wind now summons a Tornado that follows enemies and continually damages all enemies in its path.
Off-HandUnrepentant Gale - Maximum Arcane Wind charges increased by 1.
HelmCowl of the Abyss - Black Hole radius increased by 20%.
ShoulderShoulders of the Cataclysm - Meteor damage increased by 10%.
ChestStarcaller's Drapery - Meteor radius increased by 20%.
PantsGalebringer's Leggings - Increases Arcane Wind damage by 10%.

Gameplay

In high level Challenge Rifts, enemies need to be dragged in groups and killed together with AoE skills. Mechanics to manage:

  1. Keep moving forward while dragging enemies. Save Teleports in case you get stuck on enemies or terrain.
  2. When you have a sizable group of enemies, cast Black Hole to suck them up. Follow up with Meteor for additional CC and damage. Finally, cast 2 Hungering Winds on the burning ground.
  3. Repeat steps 1 & 2, dragging enemies until your Black Hole cooldown (20 seconds) is ready again.
  4. On the Rift Guardian, use all your skills. Be sure to spam Magic Missile when your other skills are on cooldown for extra single target damage.

Other Setups

  • Teleport can be dropped for another damaging AoE skill like Scorch or Ice Crystal. This setup is extremely difficult to play without getting stuck and dying, but your DPS is higher. Only attempt when trying to push the highest possible Challenge Rifts.
Chill Control - PvP

Chill Control - PvP Build

- created by Lexyu

This PvP build is designed to control opponents and objectives as a support role for your team. It's played safely at a distance, ideally behind your teammates. Practice is needed to perfect this build, as your skills require precise aiming and timing. This build can work well even if your Offense Rating and Defense Rating (ORDR) are lower than opponents. You'll become a valuable asset to your team, turning the tides of battle.

Skills & Items

Black Hole - Amazing AoE skill that groups and crowd controls enemies.

Icy Meteor - Lands faster than regular Meteor and applies a crippling chill. Follow up with this after Black Hole to make it a guaranteed hit (granted you aim it correctly).

Teleport - Our strongest movement skill that can jump over obstacles. Save Teleport charges to create distance from advancing opponents.

Ray of Frost - Another massive, crippling chill.

Magic Missile (Primary) - Extra single target damage that can be spammed while other skills are crowd controlling opponents.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandForce of Harakas - Increases Magic Missile damage by 10%.
Off-HandAny
HelmCowl of the Abyss - Black Hole radius increased by 20%.
ShoulderShoulders of the Cataclysm - Meteor damage increased by 10%.
ChestKyn's Cyromantle - Ray of Frost now unleashes a stronger instantaneous beam after a short delay, damaging and freezing all enemies in its path.
PantsFrostwalkers - Meteor now summons an icy meteor, dealing damage and covering the area with icy ground that deals additional damage and Chills enemies.

Gameplay

Chill Control playstyle involves strategic use of crowd control skills. Mechanics to manage:

  1. Make sure to save Teleport charges to get away from advancing enemies.
  2. Use Black Hole first, as it's your easiest skill to land on opponents. Land an Icy Meteor before Black Hole ends, followed by Ray of Frost.
  3. Play with your teammates and wait for them if necessary. You're most effective supporting a group.

Other Setups

  • Cowl of the Abyss can be swapped for Mask of Illusions for sneaky plays and make easy disengagement. More accurate Black Hole usage is needed without the increased radius.
  • Vision of the Frozen Path and Angmar's Repulsive Burden combined create a Frozen Orb that rapidly activates Knockbacks with each hit. Replaces Ray of Frost.
Battlemage - PvP

Battlemage - PvP Build

- created by Lexyu

This is the most aggressive Wizard build in PvP, designed to rack up the kill count. It focuses on jumping into the fray and dealing damage up close. Multiple knockbacks are chained together to lock down opponents, while damaging skills rapidly hit at once. Your damage can melt opponents instantly, but you're also squishy. Fast reactions are needed. This build won't work well if your Offense Rating and Defense Rating (OR&DR) are considerably lower than your opponents.

Skills & Items

Scorch - All four flaming orbs from Memory of Xiaoyu cause knockback when combined with Angmar's Repulsive Burden. Knockback is the most powerful crowd control mechanic in PvP. Learn to move around opponents to hit them with the flaming orbs.

Ice Storm - Passive damage that can be precasted before engagements. Also chills nearby opponents.

Teleport - Our strongest movement skill that can jump over obstacles. Teleport on top of opponents to engage and instantly deal high damage. Manage your charges well, allowing them to recharge before jumping into battle.

Lightning Nova - Can be precasted before Teleporting on top of opponents. The balls will hit them as they follow you to the new location.

Magic Missile (Primary) - The extra single target damage is spammed while your other skills are passively dealing damage.

SlotLegendary Items
Main-HandForce of Harakas - Increases Magic Missile damage by 10%.
Off-HandWinter's Eye - Ice Armor no longer absorbs damage, instead conjuring an Ice Storm around you that continually damages and Chills nearby enemies.
HelmMemory of Xiaoyu - Scorch now conjures four flaming orbs that orbit around you and explode when they strike enemies, damaging and Burning all nearby enemies.
ShoulderAngmar's Repulsive Burden - Scorch will now knock enemies away.
ChestRegalia of the Archmage - Lightning Nova now hurls balls of Immobilizing arcane energy.
PantsRiftdancer's Stride - Teleport now targets a location where it also damages all nearby enemies.

Gameplay

Battlemage playstyle involves using Teleport offensively to jump right on top of your opponents while quickly firing off all your skills. Mechanics to manage:

  1. Make sure you have 3 Teleport charges before fighting.
  2. Precast Flaming Orbs, Ice Storm, and Lightning Nova when it's time to engage. These skills will deal damage passively while you're in combat. Learn to use good situational awareness to gauge the proper time to jump in.
  3. Teleport on opponents to engage and deal damage. Don't use excessively. Save some charges for chasing or disengaging.
  4. Stay on top of your opponents to allow your passive damage to hit, while casting Magic Missiles. Legendary Gems like Howler's Call and Lightning Core can proc off your Magic Missiles for extra damage. Flaming Orbs can be casted again after the first 4 knockbacks are used. Use additional Teleports if they get away from you.

Other Setups

  • Lightning Nova can be replaced with Black Hole or Ray of Frost with Kyn's Cryomantle for more control.
  • Storm Armor with Heart of the Storm has more range than Ice Storm, but no chill. Zann Esu Elemental Weave can be used to provide chill with Lightning Nova instead.

Wizard Skills

You can choose 1 Primary Attack and 4 Skills to use at a time. Primary Attacks have no cooldown and fill your Ultimate bar when used. When the Ultimate bar is full, you can cast the Ultimate ability. Skills automatically gain ranks as you level up and can be switched around anytime out of combat. Special endgame items called Charms add additional skill ranks that enhance their power. There are also Legendary Items that modify a skill's power. Let's look at the Wizard's skills in detail to understand how they work:

Class Consumable

Every class has its own consumable item that drops from turning in a Bestiary page as well as from Zone Event Bosses. The Wizard has Scroll of Westmarch which opens a portal to Westmarch any party member can use.

Magic Missile (Primary Attack)

Unlocked: Level 1
Cooldown: None
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s): None

Magic Missile

Description: Launch a missile of magic energy, dealing damage.

Ultimate: Ice Missile - Enhance Magic Missile with frost for 12 seconds, increasing its damage and slowing the movement of affected enemies.

Best Use: This is the Wizard's best primary attack for single target damage. Spam it when your other skills are on cooldown.

SlotLegendary Item
Main HandForce of Harakas - Increases Magic Missile damage by 10%.

Electrocute (Primary Attack)

Unlocked: Level 34
Cooldown: None
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s): None

Electrocute

Description: Arc lightning from your fingertips, dealing damage to the first enemy struck, and then leaping to 3 additional enemies for 30% as much damage.

Best Use: Compared to Magic Missile, this skill sacrifices initial damage to hit additional enemies. The leaping damage is too low and other Wizard skills already excel at AoE damage, making Magic Missile the best primary skill.

SlotLegendary Item
Main HandElectrospike - Electrocute leaps to ??? additional enemies.

Arcane Wind

Unlocked: Level 1
Cooldown: 9 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Arcane Wind

Description: Unleash a blast of wind in a direction, dealing damage and knocking away enemies. Charging longer increases range, knock away distance, and damage. Deal 50% increased damage to Burning enemies.

Best Use: The charge up time makes un-modified Arcane Wind not worthwhile. However, Hungering Wind from Windshaper deals high total damage per cast. Tornados on burning ground from Meteor or Scorch cause a Firestorm dealing 50% more damage.

SlotLegendary Item
Main HandDevastation - Arcane Wind now summons a Tornado that damages enemies in a line. Also increases Arcane Wind maximum charges by 1.
Windshaper - Arcane Wind now summons a Tornado that follows enemies and continually damages all enemies in its path.
Off HandUnrepentant Gale - Maximum Arcane Wind charges increased by 1.
LegsGalebringer's Leggings - Increases Arcane Wind damage by 10%.

Black Hole

Unlocked: Level 38
Cooldown: 20 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Black Hole

Description: Conjures a black hole for 3 seconds at a location, which will pull in all nearby enemies and deal damage over 3 seconds.

Best Use: This skill doesn't do much damage, but the ability to group and crowd control enemies makes it a powerful utility. Use it to gather enemies before casting your more damaging AoE skills.

SlotLegendary Item
Main HandNegation Blade - Black Hole also absorbs nearby enemy projectiles.
Off HandDevouring Void - Black Hole moves forward a short distance, pulling in and damaging enemies as it travels.
HeadCowl of the Abyss - Black Hole radius increased by 20%.

Disintegrate

Unlocked: Level 29
Cooldown: 0.5 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Disintegrate

Description: Channel a beam of pure energy in a direction, continually dealing damage to all nearby enemies caught in the beam and causing them to take 2% increased damage for 1.5 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. Using Disintegrate slowly consumes its energy, which recovers while Disintegrate is not in use.

Best Use: You must stand still to channel this skill, making you vulnerable to attacks. The damage is too low for the time required to channel it. Casting instant spells while weaving in primary attacks is better DPS. The instantaneous beam from Arcane Intensifiers has decent damage and applies the full 10% increased damage taken debuff, making it useful for groups.

SlotLegendary Item
Main HandEntropic Edge - Disintegrate damage increased by 10%.
ShouldersArcane Intensifiers - Disintegrate will fire a stronger instantaneous beam after a short delay.
Pads of Protection - Disintegrate now fractures into a short-ranged cone.
Searing Judgement - Disintegrate now channels Fire, Burning enemies for additional damage over time.
LegsChaos Nexus - Disintegrate channels up to 3 additional beams at nearby enemies, each continually dealing damage.
Kavil's Grand Revelation - Enemies killed by Disintegrate will explode, dealing damage to all nearby enemies.

Ice Armor

Unlocked: Level 44
Cooldown: 20 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Ice Armor

Description: Surround yourself in a barrier of ice for 8 seconds that absorbs damage. When the barrier expires, it will shatter for damage to all nearby enemies and inflict 40% Chill for 4 seconds. Activate again to shatter the barrier immediately.

Best Use: This skill doesn't have any use in PvE due to its long cooldown and low damage. In PvP Battlemage builds it can be precasted with Heart of the Storm or Winter's Eye for simultaneous damage with other skills.

SlotLegendary Item
Off HandHeart of the Storm - Ice Armor becomes Storm Armor, continually damaging nearby enemies.
Icon of Synchronicity - Ice Armor now also grants damage absorption to your nearby allies.
Winter's Eye - Ice Armor no longer absorbs damage, instead conjuring an Ice Storm around you that continually damages and Chills nearby enemies.

Ice Crystal

Unlocked: Level 24
Cooldown: 30 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Ice Crystal

Description: Conjure a giant ice crystal at a nearby location, where it will deal damage to all nearby enemies over 12 seconds and inflict 30% Chill. When the crystal expires, it will shatter for damage to all nearby enemies and inflict 80% Chill for 4 seconds. Activate again to shatter the crystal immediately.

Best Use: This skill's total damage is high, but is limited by its long duration and cooldown. Hitting a crystal with Disintegrate or Ray of Frost reflects beams to all nearby enemies. It's only useful when dragging a high density of monsters during Challenge Rift pushes.

SlotLegendary Item
ChestFrostreaver's Garments - Ice Crystal now summons a Freezing Crystal that inflicts greater damage over time and a stacking Chill, but can no longer be shattered early.

Lightning Nova

Unlocked: Level 3
Cooldown: 6 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Lightning Nova

Description: Hurl 10 balls of lightning away from you in all directions, dealing damage as they pass outward and again as they return to your new location. Limit 6 hits per target. Hits 2 and beyond on a target deal only 30% damage.

Best Use: The Siphon turns Lightning Nova into a movement skill, making it useful for speed builds. Teleport on top of targets to maximize the amount of hits.

SlotLegendary Item
Off HandMaelstrom Orb - Lightning Nova damage increased by 10%.
The Siphon - Casting Lightning Nova temporarily increases your movement speed by 20%.
ChestEllora's Fevor - Lightning Nova now hurls balls of Burning fire.
Regalia of the Archmage - Lightning Nova now hurls balls of Immobilizing arcane energy.
Zann Esu Elemental Weave - Lightning Nova now hurls balls of Chilling ice.

Meteor

Unlocked: Level 41
Cooldown: 9 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Meteor

Description: Summon an immense meteor that plummets from the sky, dealing damage and Stunning all enemies in the impact area for 3 seconds. The ground it hits is scorched, Burning enemies for damage over 6 seconds.

Best Use: This skill has a delay before landing and needs to be property aimed/timed. Use Black Hole before Meteor to make it easier to land. Huge damage in one hit and burning ground for Firestorms make this a powerful skill.

SlotLegendary Item
ShouldersShoulders of the Cataclysm - Meteor damage increased by 10%.
ChestStarcaller's Drapery - Meteor radius increased by 20%.
PantsFrostwalkers - Meteor now summons an icy meteor, dealing damage and covering the area with icy ground that deals additional damage and Chills enemies.

Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Ray of Frost

Description: Channel a beam of frost in a direction, continually dealing damage to all enemies caught in the beam and inflicting 12% Chill for 1.5 seconds, stacking up to 6 times. Using Ray of Frost slowly consumes its energy, which recovers while Ray of Frost is not in use.

Best Use: You must stand still to channel this skill, making you vulnerable to attacks. The damage is too low for the time required to channel it. Casting instant spells while weaving in primary attacks is better DPS. The instantaneous beam from Kyn's Cyromantle has decent damage and the freeze is useful in PvP.

SlotLegendary Item
ChestKyn's Cyromantle - Ray of Frost now unleashes a stronger instantaneous beam after a short delay, damaging and freezing all enemies in its path.
Robes of the Avalanche - Ray of Frost now channels a blizzard around you, continually damaging and Chilling nearby enemies.
ShouldersRime Mantle - Enemies killed by Ray of Frost will shatter, dealing damage to all nearby enemies and inflicting Chill.

Scorch

Unlocked: Level 1
Cooldown: 9 Seconds
Charms: 1% / 2% / 3% Damage
Type(s):

Scorch

Description: Launch a flaming orb that deals damage and knocks away enemies, leaving a Burning trail that deals damage over 6 seconds.

Best Use: This skill has decent damage and the burning ground can be used for Firestorms. Frozen Orb with Vision of the Frozen Path has a lowest total damage, while Flaming Orbs with Memory of Xiaoyu has the highest total damage. Each individual hit with Angmar's Repulsive Burden causes knockback, making it ridiculously powerful for PvP.

SlotLegendary Item
Off HandAzkalor's Fire - Scorch damage increased by 10%.
HeadCowl of Arcane Truths - Scorch now launches an arcane orb that explodes when activated again or when it expires, damaging all nearby enemies. Damage and explosion radius grow as it travels.

Mask of Illusions - Teleport now causes you to become invisible and leave behind a mirror image.
PantsRiftdancer's Stride - Teleport now targets a location where it also damages all nearby enemies.
Time-warped Cloth - Teleport can now be recast, transporting you back to your original location.

Wizard Stat Priorities

Attributes

Offense Rating and Defense Rating (ORDR) are the two most important stats for all classes in Diablo Immortal. In order to maximize ORDR, prioritize the total amount of attributes on your gear. You gain 1 point of ORDR from every attribute point (Strength, Fortitude, Vitality, Willpower, Intelligence).

The Wizard's main stat is Intelligence, giving +4 Damage per point. All other things equal, use gear with Intelligence to maximize the damage you deal. Fortitude is also important early on because it gives you Armor Penetration (and therefore Critical Hit Chance), but becomes less important later due to diminishing returns on how much Critical Hit Chance you can gain.

The Wizard's worst stat is Strength because it only gives +1 ORDR. If possible, don't use it.

  1. Intelligence - +1 ORDR and +4 Damage.
  2. Fortitude - +1 ORDR, +6 Armor, and +6 Armor Penetration. Armor increases your chance to Block, which mitigates 20% of incoming damage. This is a nice defensive boost, especially when pushing Challenge Rifts or Helliquary bosses. Armor Penetration gives Critical Hit Chance, but it has diminishing returns at higher values.
  3. Vitality - +1 ORDR and +40 Life. It never hurts to have more life, especially for end game pushes and PvP. Vitality is the best stat after the damage-dealing ones.
  4. Willpower - +1 ORDR, +1 Potency, and +1 Resistance. Potency increases the duration of harmful effects on enemies, while Resistance lowers the duration of harmful effects on you from enemies. Maybe one day in Diablo Immortal these durations will play a larger role, but currently they don't seem to matter much and are never prioritized.
  5. Strength - +1 ORDR. Gives nothing extra and is therefore the worst stat.

Magic Affixes

Because the total amount of attributes is so important, we rarely prioritize magic affixes on gear. Still, several magic affixes can make a difference, including Critical Hit Chance, Critical Hit Damage, Damage to Players (for PvP), or All Damage Increased. For more information, check out our full Attribute and Magic Affix Guide!

Normal Gems

Secondary equipment slots allow you to use Normal Gems. Maximizing these slots can help boost your character's power, but should not be prioritized over the total amount of attributes.

Red: Tourmaline > Ruby. Since Tourmaline gives Damage, it is usually your most important normal gem.

Blue: Sapphire > Aquamarine. When you begin to hit diminishing returns with Critical Hit Chance from Armor Penetration, Aquamarine is better.

Yellow: Citrine OR Topaz. This is the least useful gem color. Potency can be useful if you have duration skills, otherwise get all resistance.

Legendary Gems

Legendary Gems can be found as a reward after activating a Legendary Crest on an Elder Rift and killing the boss at the end. Many of them can also be crafted using Runes and Platinum at the Jeweler in Westmarch, which allows you to target one you have to rank it up. With the possibility of ranking up all the way to level 10, these gems increase in power each level and provide insane bonuses at high ranks. Some of these Gems give more powerful stat boosts and effects than others, but luckily there are many good options to choose from for Wizards. If you want to read up more on how these work check out our Legendary Gems Guide.

PvE

When fighting against monsters the following Gems provide Wizards with powerful effects and stat boosts that will help decimate large packs of enemies. Many of these Gems are Damage focused while some can help improve your survivability, taking a few of each will lead to a well-rounded character.

  1. Howler’s Call: +70 - 120% base attribute. Primary Attacks have a 30% chance to summon a charging spirit wolf that inflicts 100% damage to all enemies in its path. 10 second cooldown.
    • This Gem provides massive damage in front of your character and can wipe out an entire room of enemies if they’re grouped together. It's unbelievably powerful and you want this, big time.
  2. Seeping Bile: +70 - 120% base attribute. Attacks have a 5% chance to poison enemies, inflicting 25% + 303 damage every second for 3 seconds. This poison spreads to nearby enemies if the victim dies. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 6 seconds.
  3. Blessing of the Worthy: +70 - 120% base attribute. When you take damage, you have a 20% chance to unleash retribution on all nearby enemies, dealing damage equal to 10% of your maximum life. 15 second cooldown.
    • Although Wizards aren’t always in melee range, when enemies get close and hit you, retaliating with a devastating attack that can wipe out an entire room is sometimes just what you need (and what feels good). As you power up you can just stand in the middle of monsters to get the full value of the gem. Did somebody say Battlemage?!
  4. Lightning Core: +40 - 50% base attribute. Your attacks have a 10% chance to call chain lightning, inflicting 60% + 729 additional damage to all enemies near the target. This cannot occur more often than once every 15 seconds.
    • The chain lightning deals meaningful free damage in high density, making it a powerful option.
  5. Fervent Fang: +40 - 50% base attribute. Each attack you make against an enemy increases the damage it takes from your attacks by 0.75%, up to a maximum of 7.5% at 10 stacks.
    • This is one of the best single target Gems in the game and should always have a spot in any PvE build. As enemies get stronger and take longer to take down this Gem becomes even more valuable.
  6. Power & Command: +40 - 50% base attribute. Power and Command alternates states every 9 seconds. Power increases your Primary Attack damage by 7.5%. Command increases all other skill damage by 7.5%.
    • This gem works well for Wizards because we weave in Primary attacks in-between Skill cooldowns, so we’re always getting a some bonus damage one way or another.
  7. Bloody Reach: +40 - 50% base attribute. Increases all damage you deal by 1.50% for every 2 yards between you and the enemy hit. Maximum increase of 6% at 8 yards.
    • All around a pretty solid gem if you attack at range.
  8. Berserker’s Eye: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases all damage you deal by 5.00%, but increases all damage you take by 6%.
    • Overall a decent DPS boost, but taking more damage and the low base attribute boost make other gems a better choice.
  9. Seled’s Weakening: +20 - 25% base attribute. Gain 6.00% increased damage for 60 seconds after killing an Elite monster.
    • Not a bad Gem for starting out, but there are better options out there.
  10. Ca’arsen’s Invigoration: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases the speed of your Primary Attack by 6.00%.
    • Somewhat decent for Wizards because they need to spam Magic Missile for extra single target damage.
  11. Chained Death: +20 - 25% base attribute. Increases damage done by your attacks by 1.50% per target hit, up to a maximum of 4.5% with 3 targets.
    • Decent synergy with Wizard AoE skills, but not the best gem out there.

These Gems should be replaced as soon as you get something from the list above: Cutthroat’s Grin, Lo’s Focused Gaze, Mocking Laughter, Nightmare Wreath, Pain of Subjugation, Respite Stone, The Hungerer, Trickshot Gem, Unity Crystal, Zod Stone.

PvP

The following Gems are amazing for PvP content. All of these gems are similar in that they provide a massive defensive boost for your character. Using the PvE list above, drop your least powerful Legendary Gems to pick up 2-3 of these when going into PvP.

  1. Phoenix Ashes: +70 - 120% base attribute. Prevents fatal damage, and then grants a shield for 6 seconds that absorbs 100% of your life in damage. When the shield expires, heal for 0% of the remaining value. 300 second cooldown.
    • This Gem is currently bugged and barely provides any shielding, but once it’s fixed it'll likely be the best PvP Gem in the game.
  2. Chip of Stoned Flesh: +70 - 120% base attribute. Your attacks have a 5% chance to petrify your target, Stunning them for 1 second. Cannot affect the same target more than once every 20 seconds.
    • Petrifying a target at the right moment can save your life, and the massive stat boost it provides makes it even stronger. This is currently not working as intended in PvP.
  3. Frozen Heart: +70 - 120% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies further than 3 yards away by 10%.
    • The damage reduction and base attribute boosts from this Gem make it fantastic for PvP.
  4. Battleguard: +40 - 50% base attribute. Reduces all damage you take from enemies within 3 yards of you by 6.00%.
    • Not as good as Frozen Heart because the stats across the board are lower. Still can’t argue with damage reduction in PvP. It's more useful in a Battlemage build.
  5. The Black Rose: +20 - 25% base attribute. Each time you are attacked, you have a 10% chance to summon vines that Immobilize the attack for 1.5 seconds. Each enemy cannot be affected by this more than once every 12 seconds.
    • Although this isn’t the greatest Gem in the game, the root can save your life if you need to escape a dangerous situation. When ranked up the immobilized duration increases as well, reaching a punishing 4.5 seconds at Rank 10.
